Samsung's fashion phone with a twist
Aside from the Ultra Edition II series of slim handsets, Samsung showcases a mobile phone with a unique touch-sensitive OLED directional pad.
Samsung has always maintained the mid to high end of the market when it comes to its mobile phones. That's why these handsets have to contain the latest and greatest in features or be really good-looking.
With this end in mind, Samsung will be showcasing its latest line-up at this year's CommunicAsia out at the Singapore Expo. Taking center stage is, of course, the Ultra Edition II series announced earlier. The Ultra series broke a few records for thinness when it was first launched but the Korean company won't be caught resting on its laurels. Included in the Ultra Edition II are the U600 and U700 models, which measure just 10.9mm and 12.1mm in thicknesses, respectively. The extra 1.2mm in the U700 gives it 3G with HSDPA connectivity for high-speed downloads over the cellular network.
Aside from those, new at the show are a few fashion phones. First up is the SGH-E950, a slider model with a touchscreen front face. Material use is a big consideration for this handset and Samsung has chosen a metal finish. Under the main display, the touch-sensitive directional pad is also an OLED display, showing what shortcuts the four directions and center selector represent or just arrows when used in menus. Measuring 98 x 46 x 15mm, this triband cell phone will be available in July all over Southeast Asia.
Also new on display is the SGH-J600. With features like a 1.3-megapixel camera and a small 1.9-inch display, you know it isn't for the power-hungry. What makes it stand out are the four colors you can choose from--gray, blue silver and pink. It is also very compact at 90.6 x 44.7 x 17.9mm and weighs just 99g. You don't have to wait long for it, too, as it is available immediately in selected Southeast Asian markets. Price and specific countries' availability are to be announced later.
