3GSM World Congress preview

By Reuben Lee

It's that time of year again when the global telecom industry shifts its focus to the annual 3GSM World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona. As with previous years, major vendors are expected to use the event as a platform to showcase their latest cellular products and technologies. Before the onslaught of mobile phone announcements hits us, here's some storming of our own as we take a peek at some of the handsets expected to be unveiled at the show.

Sony Ericsson K550i
Sony Ericsson's eight new handsets unveiled last week will most certainly make an appearance at the event, with the new Walkman (W880i, W610i) and Cyber-shot (K810i, K550i) models expected to take most of the limelight. Visitors will also be shown the company's new range of mobile phone accessories.

Nokia, which is holding a similar media event in Bangkok this week for Asian journalists, is expected to announce a slew of new handsets. One of them will be a mid-priced DVB-H TV-phone, rumored to be called the N77. Word is the Finnish mobile giant will also showcase wireless USB in its N-series handsets at the trade fair.

The new Motorola handsets
Also expected to make their debut at 3GSM are updates to Motorola's KRZR, RIZR, SCPL and W-series lineup, though most of the attention will be focused on the new Q2 smart phone which will be available in HSDPA and EV-DO versions. These were announced earlier at an analyst meeting.

Samsung's Ultra series will probably play a major role for the Korean mobile phone maker at the Barcelona tradeshow. Weeks earlier, the company announced in Europe slimmer versions of its Ultra Edition handsets, including the super-slim Ultra Edition 5.9 and 10.9. However, the star attraction, we suspect, is the Ultra Smart F700 which was a surprise announcement late last week.

Korean rival LG is expected to showcase the Prada and Shine handsets as well as new updates to its popular Chocolate series.

To cap if off, Microsoft's announcement of its new Windows Mobile 6 platform late last week is expected to see a unveiling by its partners of new handhelds running on the OS. And who knows? If earlier rumors hold true, visitors might even get a glimpse of the so-called Zune phone.
