HP launches iPaq PDA-phone trio

By Reuben Lee

SINGAPORE--HP introduces three new PDA-phone additions to its iPaq family including a second GPS offering, the hw6965, as well as the ultracompact rw6818 and rw6828 handhelds.

The spotlight at the recent HP launch was clearly on the two rw6800 series handhelds. Sporting an almost identical design and feature set as the O2 Xda Atom, many journalists at the event believed that the rw6818 and rw6828 were produced by the same manufacturer, though HP declined to comment on this. More importantly, the new releases signal the Palo Alto giant's intention to grab a share of the ultracompact PDA-phone market, currently dominated by O2 and Dopod.

Despite the similarities between HP's rw6800 iPaqs and O2's Atom, there are several features that differentiate the two. In addition to the onboard support for push email, the hw6800 handhelds also come with Philips' LifeVibes 3D sound effects. We spotted slight cosmetic differences between the two, but what really makes the iPaqs stand out is the optional limited-edition "skins" for users to add a touch of personalization to their PDAs.

In a press statement released earlier, Robin Seow, general manager of HP's Personal Systems Group in Singapore, believed that the introduction of customizable skins was evidence of the company's "commitment to go beyond great product features".

The rw6800 series is one of the first attempts by HP to allow exterior customization on its handhelds. The first collection of four skin designs, created by local designers, will cost S$30 (for each skin); application of the skin will offered free of charge by appointed third-party vendors. According to HP, other collections of skins will be made available seasonally.

Also showcased at the event was the iPaq hw6965, HP's successor to the GPS-enabled hw6515 PDA-phone, with Windows Mobile 5.0 and Wi-Fi. Noteworthy features on the new iPaq is the onboard push email capabilities, QWERTY keypad, a faster 416MHz processor, miniSD slot and a 2-megapixel camera. (Read the full review here.)

The Wi-Fi-enabled rw6828, which comes in metallic silver, will be available at the end of May, while the Wi-Fi-less version, the white rw6818, is expected to debut only in the middle of June. The hw6965 will hit shelves before the end of June.
