SINGAPORE--Samsung clearly hopes to emulate the success of Motorola's super-thin Razrs by announcing the launch of three new slim phones in the second quarter of this year. These three handsets (SGH-Z540, SGH-D820 and SGH-P300) were first showcased at the recent 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Aimed at mobile users who want a slim design phone without having to compromise on multimedia functionalities, the common features on the three new handsets include a 1.3-megapixel camera, video recording and playback, onboard music player and Bluetooth.

Ng Long Shyang, director of Sales and Marketing for Telecoms and PC Peripherals in Samsung Asia, believes the "series of new phones emphasizes and continues Samsung's heritage for combining the best in global design and technical prowess".

Of the phone trio, the spotlight is on the SGH-Z540. Touted as the slimmest 3G handset in the world, this triband clamshell measures just 14.9mm thick and offers dual onboard speakers as well as 140MB of built-in memory. Equally impressive is the slim SGH-D820 slider which packs a strong feature set that includes an internal digital power amp, microSD expandability, TV output and document viewer.

The handset that caught our attention, however, was the credit card-sized SGH-P300. Measuring a tiny 87.5 x 54.5 x 8.9mm, this petite-looking Samsung is undoubtedly one of the smallest and perhaps slimmest mobiles in the market. Interestingly, the P300 comes bundled with a leather case which doubles as a second battery.
