The Singapore 3G SwingAs Singapore embarks on a landmark journey into the brave new world of 3G, CNETAsia takes a quick look at the five 3G handsets launched so far. Understandably, video capture and playback are crucially available on all these mobile phones. Out of the four companies represented, Motorola is the only manufacturer to release two models simultaneously with the A1000 and the E1000. Both pack triband capabilities, 1.2-megapixel cameras with digital zoom, Bluetooth connectivity and TransFlash expansion slots for additional storage. Catered for the mobile professional, the A1000 is the only one that incorporates a 208 x 320-pixel touch screen. On the other hand, the E1000 should appeal more to entertainment enthusiasts with its 240 x 320-pixel, 260K-color display and 3D gaming features. Clamshell lovers can choose between the Sony Ericsson Z1010 and the LG U8100, both adopting slightly smaller 176 x 220-pixel internal displays. Comparatively, the 65K-color screen on the Z1010 loses out to the U8100's 262K-colors. Although the Z1010 employs dual cameras with the external being a VGA shooter, Bluetooth is included and its ability to churn out sounds and melodies with 74-chord polyphony should provide users with pure acoustic delight. With the U8100, LG doesn't lack far behind with 72-chord polyphony as well as a rotating camera which also produces up to 640 x 480-pixel VGA images. Unfortunately both models are dualband only which may not suit frequent travelers. Of course, Nokia isn't about to sit idly by and watch its competitors steal the limelight. Despite launching about a week later, the triband 6630 boasts a single 1.3-megapixel camera with 6x digital zoom, Bluetooth and RS-MMC expansion slot for storing video and music files. To engage in two-way video conferencing, the 6630 requires the additional use of the Nokia Video Call Stand accessory which serves as an internal video camera. Completing the setup is a 176 x 208-pixel, 65K-color display in a conspicuously noticeable design much like the Nokia 3650. With a myriad of 3G models, users have the luxury of choice. Some advice from us though: because 3G network coverage in Singapore is still in its infancy, don't expect flawless, ubiquitous access. Also, do remember that 3G phones are still handphones by nature, so try out its other features as well to find the right handset for you. All five models are currently retailing at various SingTel outlets. 3G Models
