xda gets all-in-one upgrade

By Aloysius Choong

O2 has finally announced the long-awaited sequel to last year's xda, one of the more successful PDA-phone hybrids on the market.

Although images of the new xda 2 have yet to be released, its specifications make a strong case on paper. In terms of features, the new PDA promises to be a vast improvement over its predecessor, both in depth and width.

O2's xda gets a real successor at last.
Included in the upcoming handheld will be a 65,000-color display, a step up from the original xda's inadequate 4,096-color screen. The successor is also expected to run on a 400MHz Intel XScale processor, a boost from the 206MHz StrongARM chip harnessed previously.

Business users should be pleased with the addition of triple band capability, which means the xda's phone functions will be usable in most parts of North America, Europe and Asia. Bluetooth is also present, while Wi-Fi will be optional. Incidentally, O2, a mobile operator in Europe, is aggressively launching wireless LAN services in the UK and Germany.

One surprise in the xda 2 is its built-in digital camera. Although the device offers a scant image resolution of 640x480 pixels, O2 may well be looking at MMS to drive its revenue--as will local mobile operators.

The xda 2 is expected to hit the UK, Germany and Ireland by year-end. However, pricing and launch dates in Asia are currently not available.
