Ringtones and MIDI files: A perfect chord

By Aloysius Choong

Mobile phones have traditionally been PC-free, meaning they operate independently of computers.

But the trend towards convergence means more and more phones these days come with peer-to-peer connectivity options such as infrared and Bluetooth. Siemens, for instance, includes data cables with the S45/ME45 to sync data with your desktop email client.

This allows information such as phonebook entries and voice memos to be exchanged between the PC and the mobile phone. Polyphony is one feature that will benefit greatly from such a bridge, allowing music files to be readily loaded onto phones as ringtones.
