Top 5 flip phones

By Aloysius Choong

Some phone users are put off by unnecessary appendages on their handsets, but others can't resist opening a flip phone with the quick flick of the wrist.

In any case, as some users have observed, flip phones seem to be getting fewer these days. But for now, there are still more than enough handsets for us to compile this list of the top five flips that we like best.

1. Sony Ericsson P800

We are not doing cartwheels over its pastel blue theme, but we can't help noticing the Sony Ericsson P800's splendid features. With a 4,096-color screen, Bluetooth, GPRS, and a built-in digital camera, it's Ericsson technology at its best. Couple that with Sony's marketing might, and we may well have a winner in our hands. Expect the Sony Ericsson P800 in Q4 this year.

2. Sony CMD-Z7

The CMD-Z7 is typical Sony with its slick design and an idiot-proof user interface. If the company's earlier phones were anything to go by, the CMD-Z7 may not deliver the biggest bang for the buck, but otherwise succeeds utterly as a product of desire. Expect this Sony to hit the markets very soon.

3. Nokia 6500

Nokia has had great success with sliding covers, but the Finnish phone maker just couldn't resist giving a shot at making a flip phone. The 6500 isn't a bad try, too, although it does appear suspiciously like an 8310 in disguise. The good news is flip phone lovers finally have a Nokia to choose from. Unfortunately, the 6500 will not be available in Singapore.

4. Trium Neptune

It may not be the hottest phone on the streets right now, but you can't deny the uniqueness of the Trium Neptune. The translucent shell and the uncommonly plump silhouette gives it a distinct personality. If you happen to be a Austin Powers wannabe, the Neptune will take you to the height of grooviness.

5. Samsung SGH-N200

The Samsung SGH-N200 is one of the lightest and slimmest phones on the market. It barely makes a dent in your pocket, but then it also gets lost in cluttered handbags. When you switch on the phone, the SGH-N200 shines out in Samsung's brilliant, arresting blue.
