User Review for Samsung SGH-E890
Cool phone with a few problems and some cool features
Oct 22, 2007Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: touch screen
Cons: software problems
Opinion:
I got this phone a few months ago. For the price, I think that it is a really good deal. I wanted a phone with a touch screen, because I find it hard to write e-mails and use calendar with regular phones. I used to use palmpilot for calendar, but did not want to carry two gadgets around. Even though this phone's calendar is not as sophisticated, it is just fine for me. Phone can also sync your outlook contacts and calendar (or with its own software that you can download), so you can easily create a backup of your numbers, enter info on your conputer, etc....
In general, the touch screen is really cool. Writing SMS and e-mails is much easier than with regular phone, since it has a full keyboard (you do not have to use the hand writing if you do not want to, it also has "virtual" keyboard, and a virtual keypad, if you like the traditional way of SMSing!). I do not even use the styllo. Camera is pretty good. Voice recorder is userfull, to record directions, or similar. Notepad feature can be usefull to write something down fast, but cannot be sent via SMS or e-mail, which it a pity, so i do not really use it.
I did not have any echo problems, that others have reported, but I have used instructions posted on different websites to change the settup as soon as I got the phone, and perhaps this is why I had no problem.
Problems that I did have are all related to software. They are not really problems, rather mistakes in software that create some inconvinience:
1) when phonebook is listed by firstname, phone does not show who SMSs are coming from. Solution: I listed it by lastname, but included both first and lastname into the "lastname" space. This, however, can create a problem if you sync it with outlook.
2)Default order for phonebook is "listed by initials". Every time the phone switched off, it goes back to default, so every time I turn the phone on, I have to first list the phonebook by lastname first. This is really stupid.
3) If you have two numbers associated with same contact, after writing an SMS, when trying to send it, only the primary number shows up, and you cannot select the other number. Perhaps someone figured out how to do it, if yes, let me know.
Other than that, battery lasts 3 days with regular use, and 2 when using camera alot... So, not the best performance. Cool thing: you can use USB cable to charge it, so for example, you can charge it via USB by using your laptop, while on the plane!!
Overall, I really like it, but it is not the simplest phone out there.
