Nokia N900

Which one?

I kind of had my mine made up on the N97 and almost bought it but manual was not in English (Thailand). Now along comes the N900. Not sure if I will ever get one now. Nokia keeps coming out with phones faster than I can do the research on phones to make my decision.

Right now I kind of lean toward the N900 but will wait for review before buying.

N900...no wait the e72.....err...:s

The n97 runs Symbian like every Nokia smartphone.
The n900 runs mameo 5 which is the latest incarnation of their tablet (770-N810) os.

The hardware on the n900 blows every Nokia phone out of the water and equals the iphone 3gs & palm pre or betters them. The retail price is also lower than the n97 at launch (but its supposed to have a limited release).

The battery is 1320 mAH compared to n97's 1500 mAH and from what I've seen the 97 does not run for days. Symbian has the best battery optimization around and Nokia will have to do some serious work to make sure that battery life on this thing is not a joke.

My advice would be to try both out at a shop and go for what clicks to you rather than reading tech opinions (esp on american sites).

I myself have not been able to bring myself to use a touchscreen phone full time (poor battery, has to be used two handed, either poor ui implementation (n97) over hyped, hamstrung rubbish (iphone - and I've owned the first 2gens + an i pod touch) or bad hardware and immature software (htc/android.

Having been in love with the e71 i thought the e72 fixed all that was wrong with it (added 3.5mm jack, improved camera quality, newer sw and hw platforms, even better battery!!), but from the pics i find the e71's design to be better and am not a fan of the 2.4 qvga screen.

The n900 is really tempting as mameo is an amazing os (fully open and a very active community) and with the hardware on it the potential is great, but in a way its a first gen product (earlier one's were too niche) and chances of potential heartache high(er than tried and tested Symbian devices).

Decisions decisions..

Many thanks for the comprehensive advice "Munk". My mind is made up now, I go for the N900. I dont mind pioneering the new stuff. I love the screen. I once thought about the iPhone but seems a fad to me. I like the idea of a real computer operating system, love the big screen and Im OK with the touch screen. Hoping its available in Singapore when I pass through in October.

Glad to have helped :). I've read that the n900 will be available in select markets (EU & ME. Sadly there hasn't really been a mention of SE Asian countries though im pretty sure HK will be one of them!).

The screen really is great especially the high resolution but I would still really look at the battery life before putting my money down. Its a 1320mAH and with all that hardware it might prove to be a difficult choice for a primary phone. Good thing it has removable batteries though so one can always carry around extra ones :).

The screen btw is resistive and will be a different experience from an iphone(it has capacitative. Capacitative responds to fingers only while resistive needs pressure but is more accurate and can be used for handwriting/drawing be used with fingernails, stylus etc).

Also fyi nokia's n900 pr: www.nokia.com...

I agree with your opinions about the iphone. Its a great media player and web browser but most of everything else is severely ham-strung. Each to his own right? :)

Today is Nokia World so we'll find out more about the n900 + Nokia is also promising to show 2 more devices along with the 4-5 they have already announced/leaked in the past 10 days!

Gl with whatever you end up choosing :)

Oh yea, big help. thanks. One problem I had with touch screen is when I wanted to drag a list (scroll) and touched the screen instead of dragging it opened the icon I touched. That was on a HTC HD I had (gave to wifey) she likes it. So maybe this might be better. I'm OK with battery life as I'm not a constant user. 95% of what I do is just phone work. Presently using a N82, love it. Can access my Outlook (very important) but screen is so small. I'm not big time into multimedia, not interested in going on line at phone shops to buy software except just what I need initially. No purchase of music either. The big screen is what I'm after plus ability to go on line., browse, Facebook, built in camera with flash, etc. Also I've always been a Nokia guy although I have had a couple top of the line Sony/Ericsson phones before.

I'm surprised that Sing may not get it at first. Gee I always used to brag to my friends that if Sing dont have it its not worth having!! I keep my fingers crossed but will wait for the N900.

N900 for me

I have this on pre-order (Nokia USA). I can't wait.

Also, the statement about the circular zoom doesn't really work but only jiggles the web page is bogus. I think the 'pre-viewer' did not do it correctly. There are plenty of videos (via YouTube) that show this style of zooming does indeed work properly and effectively.

I'm glad Nokia came out with this phone/mini pc. For a while there, it looked like they were going to go the way of the Motorola (a.k.a. dodo bird)...

@Panda907, great please give us a follow up once you get your hands on it and use it. Im looking forward to its release in SE Asia.

Forget it.

I cancelled my pre-order for this phone and got the Nokia 5730 Express Music instead.

This phone doesn't have MMS for starters (and I gave iPhone users tons of flack about that before LOL!) and I am not sure if I want to go 'totally landscape' just yet.

This is their first device and I am sure there will be more. I think I will wait this one out until they can have one built more like the 5730XM. I prefer the 4 row QWERTY board and the T9 pad too.

Maybe I am getting old, but, I had an epiphany when I saw a friend of mine accidentally break his touchscreen and his phone was instantly Un-useable. This while a lady next to him had a crappy regular phone with a broken screen but was still able to dial out and use her phone...

I guess what I'm saying is, after having a few touchscreen phones and other touch screen devices, my preferences have changed to 4 row QWERTY w/T9 pad phones. Maybe a Maemo phone w/dual slider will come out and I will be happy then. =)
