The bad: Ordinary design.
The bottom line: Panasonic's DMR-ES15 is an ideal entry-level recorder for anyone looking to upgrade their old VCR. The absence of a digital tuner will discourage digital TV users--but compatibility, usability, recording and playback performance are otherwise excellent.

Avoid like the plague....
Jun 23, 2009Rating: 1 out of 10 (Abysmal)
Pros: Worked well - when it worked!
Cons: It dies out of warranty
Opinion:
Got the dreaded U99 button this morning after recording some shows last night and have had a "Please Wait" message flashing up on my DVD player now for oh, 2 hours or so. I have unplugged it, waited, pressed and held the power button to no avail. Seems to be a frequesnt occurance with this player. The other querky thing it likes to do is tell me a dvd is not formatted when I have just formatted it, or when I had only been using it. The grinding noise that alerts you to an oncoming problem is welcome.
Ok it may be a cheap model, but I think you get what you pay for and I WOULD NOT advise anyone to buy this.
A piece of junk
Oct 27, 2007Rating: 2 out of 10 (Terrible)
Pros: Makes a nice copy when it's actually operating
Cons: Constant error messages and failure to power up
Opinion:
What can you say about a machine that greats you with a "Hello" message when you power up...and then just sits there displaying it for hours? What can you say about a unit that suddenly displays the dreaded U99 message...making all controls inoperable? What can you say about a machine that needs to be repeatedly unplugged and rebooted on the slim chance it just might work like...well...any ordinary machine?
As I wrote this, the "Please...Wait" sign has been flashing for about 15 minutes. If this unit were smaller, it would make a good frisbee.
Good Experience
May 10, 2006Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Multiple Format Recording & Playback
Cons: A little flimsy compared with other brands
Opinion:
Bought this last weekend. Tried, tested.
Performed really well. The tuner located the stations quickly and transcribing them confidently. Colour & contrast are accurate and poised. So far, its the only recorder in the market that's truly universal. Recording to all five DVD formats. Not sure why Panasonic kept humble from shouting to the public as per what other brands do. Yet, others shouted but can't deliver the superd multi formats. This is a must-try recorder. At $399, I think its really too good to be true. One good point is that, it records quietly without much noise. However, the respond in recording may not be as quick as some others. But, the colour balance and dark scene insight are particularly impressive. I would really think its a good buy. In fact, I would give a 5-star ratings to this player, above the rest.
