200Hz HDTV roundup

By Philip Wong

If you're tired of a jittery Hollywood chase sequences or fuzzy soccer players racing on the field for that coveted goal, it might be high time to check out one of the following 200Hz panels. Each of this entry comes with the latest video-processing technology to reduce image blurring and film judder. The former is an inherent technological bottleneck for all LCD displays, while the latter is caused by the low 24-frames-per-second video recording speed used in capturing panning scenes.

There're two competing 200Hz implementations deployed by the key TV vendors: 200Hz motion estimation motion compensation (MEMC) and 200Hz scanning backlight. MEMC introduces full frame interpolation by inserting additional unique picture frames to "bridge" the original footages. On the other hand, 200Hz scanning backlight is a hybrid solution which combines 100Hz MEMC with high-speed on/off toggling of the LCD backlighting units to achieve a smoothening effect.

As to which technology is superior, we would suggest you drop by your local electronics store for an onsite evaluation. That said, we've also encountered some side effects such as motion artifacts and an unnatural video-like feel for films when it viewing on these 200Hz offerings.
