How to select the right Hitachi HDTV

By Philip Wong, CNET Asia

Hitachi first started off as one of the original "big three" Japanese plasma TV vendors, the other two being Panasonic and Pioneer. Like its compatriots, the company produces its own plasma panels which are based on ALiS (Alternate Lighting of Surfaces) technology co-developed with Fujitsu. This allowed Hitachi to roll out 42-inch plasma TVs featuring 40 percent higher vertical resolution than their regular XGA peers in the market. The drawback, however, is potential screen flickering due to ALiS' interlace design. Here, alternate pixel rows are illuminated so only half the screen is rendered at any one time.

In recent years, there seems to be a slight shift in focus by Hitachi toward LCD TVs. The result is a range of LCD models using two flavors of high-performance In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels. The improved Super-IPS (S-IPS) screens found in its entry-level to midrange offerings deliver extended viewing angles with no color shift penalty. The IPS-Pro iteration deployed in the Ultra Thin (UT) series further enhances overall brightness and contrast ratio. Another new addon is a motion-tuned 100Hz frame rate-doubling engine available in its X02 and UT line of LCD TVs.
