Sony HDTVs embrace digital broadcasts and networking

By Philip Wong, CNET Asia

Sony has just unleashed a barrage of colorful Bravia LCD TVs in Singapore, setting a new bar in feature set for home consumer displays. The company's W5500-, V5500-, S5500- and S5700-series HDTVs are all loaded with DLNA networking via Ethernet, as well as DVB-T TV tuners and MPEG-2/4 decoders. Previously available only in midrange to premium panels, the former allows multimedia streaming from remote home servers, while the latter two add digital broadcasting up to HD resolution. With these capabilities integrated right into the unit, there's no need to hook up external settop boxes and media streamers which ordinarily take up precious shelf space.

For detailed file format compatibility, you can check out our prior coverage on Sony's eco-friendly WE5-series. Basically, you can expect to playback music, photos and videos through your home network and the Bravia's onboard USB port. Other common features throughout the models include Sony's latest Bravia Engine 3 video processor, an icon-based XrossMediaBar graphics user interface and power-saving ambient light sensor. The higher-end W5500 and V5500 have a slight connectivity edge with four HDMI inputs. Among the two models, the W5500 stands out further with 100Hz refresh rate. The panels' dynamic contrast ranges from 30,000:1 to a high 100,000:1.

These Bravia HDTVs will be launched in Singapore from May. Unfortunately, regional pricing and availability are not included in its official press release. You can refer to the following table for an overview of the panels' features and screen sizes.
