The sleek 47SL90QD is LG's answer to the new LED-edgelit LCD TV market and offers a few key propositions that differentiate it from the competition. Not only is this model one of the slimmest at the moment, it also comes with a borderless design to deliver a flush full-glass front. On the technological end, the 47SL90QD is equipped with a premium Super-In Plane Switching (S-IPS) panel and integrated Bluetooth connectivity. The only question that remains is whether this latest LG concoction can live up to our expectations of its audio-visual performance beyond that pretty facade.

Design

At only 29.3mm thin, the 47SL90QD sets a new yardstick in the ultraslim league with its all-in-one design. This is further complemented by the above-mentioned borderless styling and dual bottom-firing speakers which give the unit a clean minimalist appeal. Added to these aesthetics is a matching, albeit flimsy, glass swivel stand and an animated power LED. Lastly, we find the right TV control placement fine, though the left A/V inputs are a little too tightly recessed. There're also no composite-A/V ports to hook up older gear.

LG is sweetening the deal with an orange-backlit remote, manually activated via a glow-in-the-dark illumination key. In addition, this ergonomic clicker packs plenty of tactile shortcut buttons to cover for most major functions. These include a Q.Menu which displays a list of commonly accessed settings such as aspect ratio, picture and audio modes. To facilitate video switching, the controller comes with TV/Radio and Input toggling keys incorporating active input detection plus user filtering through software.

The 47SL90QD's software menu is loaded with a simplified user manual and extensive customization options. There's an Intelligent Sensor mode for automatic image optimization based on your room lighting and eight program genre-specific alternatives which can be separately tailored for each input. However, our favorites are the Expert 1/2 modes for professional calibration (ISF 3C), featuring advanced white balance plus color management configurations to accurately dial in the hues. Rounding it up are three A/V presets for hassle-free audio-visual tuning for the average Joe.
