Toshiba Regza 46X3500E (46-inch LCD)
Performance:
To give the LCD TV a good workout, we had it interfaced with the company's HD-XE1 HD-DVD, a Sony PS3 console and a Pioneer DV-S969AVi DVD player. Mandatory video calibration was carried out using a computerized SpyderTV Pro, while the choice of A/V interconnects went to an assortment of Monster cables. The 46X3500E had little problem picking up all Singapore MediaCorp and a couple of neighboring Malaysian stations through our building's rooftop antenna. Stronger broadcasts showed up acceptably well with relatively sharp and clean pictures sans visible mild dot crawl.Going through the pace of the Avia synthetic test patterns, the 46X3500E was able to handle grayscale tracking and color decoding convincingly, passing both with nothing less than perfection. To verify these observations, we fired up the dark scenes in the Blade 2 DVD and were greeted by revealing shadow details in the pitch black ninja assault clip. It was another strong showing for the Regza's 480p standard-def video upscaling, evident in the detailed Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence convenience store shootout, though light jaggies were present at times. This, however, did not detract from the overall viewing experience.
Playing back at a native 1080p, The Phantom of the Opera HD-DVD was another whole new revelation. Not only were the visuals razor-sharp, noise was also near-non-existent matched by vibrant yet natural skintones and hues. Our only gripe was a slight lack of depth and blacks which were still far from the inky Samsung M8 and Sharp Aquos A83. Nor was the usually critical HD-HQV a major show-stopper for the made-in-Indonesia panel. Here, most of the benchmarks were skillfully tackled with the exception of the offending strong strobing in our Film Resolution Loss test.
For motion evaluation, we had several runs of Ridge Racer 7 and are glad to report that there was negligible ghosting. That said, there was actually a tiny hint of blurring when it comes to the fast-scrolling horizontal score ticker. So far, the overall impressions were mostly positive but the PC input's 1,360 x 768-resolution limitation had an expected toll on text clarity. Nevertheless, the softness can be improved by switching to normal (4:3) aspect at the expense of bordering black bars. Moving on, our color chart showed smooth gradations with only mild circular banding.
Ending on a high note, sound piped out by the speakers was pleasantly bassy and articulated. You will have to keep the Bass Boost function at 60 percent or lower if you want to avoid things getting a little boomy at reference level, measured at one-third maximum volume. Stereo imaging-wise, we had little issue with its centralized vocals, although surround effect via SRS WoW was disappointing. To sum it up, the Regza 46X3500E is another no-frills LCD TV with very strong focus on the fundamentals and performance. Definitely a highly recommended choice for any full-HD bargain hunters.
