The Stasia is High Definition-ready out-of-the-box offering 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution with an ability to accept up to 1080i signals. Under the hood is a 42-inch LCD panel capable of putting out a modest 550:1 contrast ratio and 500cd/m2 brightness. At first glance, these figures pale against the competition but rest assured that this is, indeed, the norm like most other 42-inchers in this region.

Automated picture enhancement for the Stasia is catered by Toshiba's proprietary "Meta Brain" engine. It provides motion/color/image optimization plus contrast/detail enhancement. In addition, there is also a 3:2 pulldown function which ensures film-based content reproduction with proper frame rate conversion.

To beef up audio reproduction, the Japanese electronics giant has also outfitted a pair of 33mm tweekers complemented by four 60 x 120mm woofers. The performance of this six-piece ensemble is further strengthened with SRS WOW technology and an adjustable bass boost function. If that is not enough to satisfy your ears, there is also an option to hook up a powered subwoofer for the ultimate earthshaking bass effect.

Like most new-gen flat panels, the 42WL58E is also equipped with an onboard SD/MS/SM card reader allowing direct JPEG and MPEG-1 playback on the unit. The latter is particularly handy for impromptu display of digital camera recorded videos which can be an eyesore on computers with its miniature 320 x 240-pixel resolution.

You will be spoilt for choice with the colossal number of video inputs found on the Toshiba. At the rear of the chassis is a pair of HDMI terminals, two sets of HD-ready component-video sockets and a PC input. This is supplemented by another two suites of composite A/V and S-video jacks conveniently located by the side and rear, respectively.
