First Take

By Philip Wong

The PS50A550S1R is Samsung's answer to the Panasonic TH-50PY800 with its trimmed-down feature set and lower S$5,599 (US$4,018.81) price. For S$1,400 (US$1,004.88) off the higher-end Samsung PS50A650T1, you will have to settle without the following niceties: Samsung's attractive Touch of Color styling, motion-oriented 100Hz Dual Scan processing and a fourth HDMI port. Is it any good compared to the above-mentioned Panasonic Viera and its Series 6 counterpart? Here's our take. ...

Quite spectacular

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Calibration and adjustment aplenty. Nice blue light shining on stand. Good appearance.
Cons: My first set panel died within 6 weeks. Slow signal detect. Sound quality is not to satisfaction.
Opinion:
My first set died on me within 6 weeks that gave me a very bad experience with Samsung since this apparently is their first attempt with plasma panel. But then, it could be a lemon. I realised the replacement set had more functions visibly working eg Cell light control and the sound quality actually was noticeable even though its nothing to gloat about.

I am impressed with the black contrast even though its not up to Pioneer level but I honestly think its to a very good level.

There are 3 presets eg Game, Movie, Sports and aside, one can customise the Standards, Dynamic and Movie with separate calibration to one's preference.

While my very first set failed very quickly, thus far, the 2nd set is giving me true enjoyment especially when I hooked up with my Denon Home Theatre amp.

I bought it at a very competitive price during the recent fair with a ... Read more

Why buy the expensive ones

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: vivid colours and overall picture,sd looks much better hd,amazing.very good tv.
Cons: shiney panel and frame reflect light, slow on detecting signals
Opinion:
At first glance in the showroom the 550 looks very slick and makes an excellent impression due to the high finish standard.
I believe that a company that makes an effort in the finish department is making a statement about the quality of the product.
When it was first setup in my home the picture of the hd satellite was amazing compared to the previous lcd panel I had.
The picture was very sharp and made a very good impression.
The colours where so real and the the way motion was suddenly visible and not blurry.
The blu ray run in was an amazing experience all tough my ps3 was set to 760p the picture was so real.
When I discovered that the ps3 was on 760p I shifted immediately to 1080p and there was a very noticeable upgrade.
I have seen no evidence to focus problems and juddering as I read on some forums.
I am very satisfied with ... Read more

This a cinema display: don't waste it on standard def. TV.

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Fantastic image
Cons: Sound is not so great
Opinion:
Just hooked up my brand-new PS50A550S1RXXS. Was a little unsure about the purchase as I could find no reviews but your sister site had a review on the US version, the PN50 so I went with that. Just been watching for a few hours, using a Philips DVD player. I've still not tried any proper HD media but SD DVD is showing better than I've ever seen it. The PN50 review warned about the black levels but honestly, I can't find anything to complain about. Maybe that was an NTSC issue. Dyamic range and skin tones are nearly spot on and I'm just using the preset picture settings. Haven't tried customised calibration yet though there is plenty of scope to personalise if and when I opt to do so. My reference is a 32" Panasonic CRT TV with a curved screen. I firmly believe there is still nothing on earth that beats a good CRT! So ... Read more
