User Review for Philips Ambilight 42PFL7803 (42-inch LCD)

Fantastic color, nice design, nicely packed, all glossy surface has a layer of protection tape on it

Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: Good value for its money (if you can get a discount on it)
Cons: Not compatible with my Nakamichi Soundspace 10, only one component input
Opinion:
If it wasn't for the incompatibility problem with my Nakamichi Soundspace 10 using component out, I would have given this TV a higher rating.

Nicely packed with all shiny/glossy surface areas properly protected. I strongly suggest that those be removed as they tend to trap heat.

Back of TV is white, though nice, has those patches of black marking typical of those on the plastic surfaces of printers. Easy to remove but made the TV rather dirty looking. The back of the TV gets a little hot and I can only imagine the black patches will get worse...

Menu is intuitive and easy to use. Remote control's layout is practical. I wish the AV selection button is not so close to the power button. And also with my older philips, I could adjust the LCD horizontal/vertical position using the up/down/left/right directional buttons directly but not so with this TV. The remote control is nice and small. The buttons are rubberized and nice...well at least for now. With Singapore's weather humid condition, I can only imagine the rubber surface peeling or melting in time to come. Also I wish the back of the remote is not in high gloss plastic as it attracts finger prints and scratches.

Free to air channels looks great with direct antenna input. The color is amazing, much better than the other flat panels I have at home. Unlike some of the TVs that looked great in stores and washed out at home, the 7803 faithfully delivers.

DVD with 1080p...simply breath taking. Have not tested blueray on it yet.

The Ambilight feature is pretty smart. Unlike my older Philips TV where the Ambilight effect is identical on the left and right, the newer Ambilight is independent, meaning for example if the left side of the screen is displaying something bright, then only that side lights up...quite cool. I wish they have this model with the 360 Ambilight and not just on the sides.

DVD/LDs through S-Video looks better than my other LCD TVs. Again, I cannot say how pleased I was with the color reproduction. I am no expert, just telling it as impressed upon.

Wii looks great with component input, I wished they made the Wii with HDMI output.

Initially my PS3 had problems displaying 1080p, after major troubleshooting, I discover that the fault lies with my HDMI cable. After replacing the cable it was okies. One thing puzzles me. If I leave the mode as HD, there are trailing shadows during game play but when I switch to PC mode, yes on a PS3 via HDMI, the pictures are sharp and amazing.

The TV base as a smaller footprint compared to my other 40 inch LCD TV. The swivel has a lock, to prevent the base from moving during shipping. That needs to be removed before one attempts to turn the TV. Good thing I did not use my bull's strength (gu lat) if not my TV would have been damaged.

On the back of the TV, at the bottom left and right are two little base woofers. The TV has excellent sound. It is rich and bassy that is hard to imagine that the sound is actually coming from a TV. So far all my Philips did not disappoint when it comes to sound.

Okies, so much for my first review. Hope this helps.
