The bad: No built-in high-resolution audio decoding; no network jack for firmware upgrades or future interactive content.
The bottom line: The Panasonic DMP-BD30 offers excellent video quality and is Blu-ray Profile 1.1-compliant, but those who want high-resolution audio will need a new-gen A/V receiver.

Fair bluray performance
Jan 9, 2009Rating: 5 out of 10 (Average)
Pros: Good Bluray disc picture quality Faster than Pioneer LX70, 71, 51, Sony S300 Small box Silent, cool operation Low power consumption
Cons: Worst DVD upconversion seen so far No 2.0 profile, no LAN port Still very long loading time compared to PS3 Doesn't like non 1.3 HDMI displays much
Opinion:
Bought this toy to replace the PS3 (which was too big and hot to fit in the shelf) as I wanted to use universal remote. It was my mistake to buy BD30 instead of 35, but checking out BD Live on PS3 I don't think I've missed out all that much. Still have another 2.0 player, so it's no big deal.
Initial impression was disappointment. It took nearly a minute to boot up and load a Bluray disc of Wall-E, which due to rendering has no noise, and usually brings out the best in bluray quality.
The picture was OK, when going through H/K AVR 355, but a bit softer than of PS3.
Loaded The Independence day, and the noise showed. Even H/K's filters had a hard time dealing with it, but this is the issue with all the BDs transferred from film.
Sound was visibly out of sync, but I've fixed that inside the receiver ... Read more
Excellent quality and perfect value for money

Pros: Picture quality, Sound Quaslity on PCM. CD sound quality amazing
Cons: Zoned - should be zone free. No built in decoders for Dolby Tru HD a.d DTS HD Naster
Opinion:
I had a long time to wait for my BD 30 to arrive in Norway. I think Panasonic use Norway as a dumping ground for end of line products as they released the BD35 just 3 weeks after having made me wait 12 weeks for the delivery of my BD30! The truth of the matter is that I am more than satisfied with the picture from the BD30. I used the PCM output to my existing amplifier but quickly wanted to hear both Dolby Tru HD and DTS HD Master so I bought the Sony STR DG820 (again a long wait) to complement it. I am delighted with the results. They are made for each other. CD sound through the Blu Ray is also exceptional.
Everything you would want from a blu ray player. delivers all the existing HD audio codecs via HDMI and is the only player with BD 1.1 specification.

Pros: Great Picture. Fast loading times compared to others on the market. Panasonic is fast with FW upgrades to fix issues....LFE and Samsung LCD issues are now a thing of the past! Plays many disc formats that others can't. 1.1 compliant!
Cons: No ethernet port...but do we really need one anyway? (FW upgrades are easy and fast by downloading the FW and burning it to a disc, then loading it onto the player...took me about 10 minutes total for the latest upgrade). Does not do internal coding for HD audio, just pass through, so you'll need a newer A/V receiver to get the best sound.
Opinion:
This is a fantastic machine that has just gotten even better with the latest Panasonic FW upgrade (to 1.3). For the price, the best on the market today. Looks fantastic with my 46" Samsung F8 LCD. I compared this to several other players and this beat them all hands down; and, with Panasonic's superb support, you can't go wrong.
I questioned whether or not I needed to be 2.0 compliant (internet capable); however, I'm more into watching the movie. The extra features available for 2.0 are currently non-existent and, from what I've read, are nothing I would take advantage of anyway.
If you don't have to have 2.0 capabilities, this is the player to buy!
