Top 10 notebooks of May
By Stephen Tong
30/05/2005

This month sees the dominance of Acer's notebooks, at least judging from the presence of its three laptops in our top 5. Our top ranking model, the Turion 64-powered Acer Aspire 5002WLMi obtained lots of hits and was a popular choice for shoppers especially at PA Mart, probably due to its attractive price. The TravelMate 3000 was our winnner for pageviews while the Compaq Presario V2000 and Asus M5N continued to perform well in sales.

Note: Results are based on the number of hits attained for each laptop on the CNETAsia notebook channel combined with the sales figures of various retailers in Sim Lim Square for May 2005.

The good:  Good performance; affordable 15.4-inch notebook; Multiformat DVD burner.
The bad:  Poor battery life; limited connectivity; one-year warranty.
The bottom line: This Acer may appeal to those who want affordability though we'd recommend the 1680 or 1690 for their better value.

2.  HP Pavilion dv4000 series

A 15.4-inch desktop replacement edition of the Pavilion dv1000, the dv4000 sports the same multimedia features which made its predecessor such a hit. Features include pre-boot DVD/MP3 playback, a remote stashed in the PCMCIA slot and a 6-in-1 card reader.

CNETAsia rating: 7.9 out of 10
The good:  Affordable; sleek design; six-pin FireWire; two batteries provided.
The bad:  Poor air vent placement; no internal optical drive; both RAM slots filled.
The bottom line: Those seeking an affordable ultraportable with the looks to match have indeed found a gem in this Acer.

4.  Samsung Q30

S$3,999 (US$2,438.41) certainly doesn't make for a very affordable notebook but the Q30 clearly wants to target the higher-end segment of the market. Undeniably stylish and feature-packed, this Samsung may just win over the female executives longing for a laptop to match their lifestyle. Check back in a few weeks for our full coverage.
