Toshiba's six sizzling notebooks
By Stephen Tong
16/05/2005

As Toshiba celebrates its 20th anniversary of providing mobile computing products, it introduces its range of new notebooks to be available in the Singapore market as of today. While the laptops Toshiba launched in March were more business-oriented, the current batch aims to please high-spending folks (all cost no less than S$4K) seeking portability as well as those with multimedia needs. The six new notebooks span the Qosmio, Portege, Tecra and Libretto lines.

The two most lightweight models are the Portege R200 and the Libretto U100. The R200 boasts a very compact frame with a 9.9mm thickness like its predecessor, the R100, and weighs a mere 1.29kg. Sporting white and grey tones, we even see a fingerprint reader for added security. The U100 marks a return for the Libretto line of notebooks. This Libretto marks the first notebook with a very tiny 7.2-inch screen and, at 980g, weighs even less than the R200.

While only one Qosmio hit the region last year, this line of AV notebooks is back with a vengeance. All three Qosmios--E10, F10 and G20--this time round have integrated TV tuners and boast the same, if not better, multimedia capabilities than the original E10. The F10 uses a 15.4-inch screen while the wallet-busting S$5,499 (US$4,048.65) G20 sparkles with a huge 17-inch screen. The G20 includes two hard disks which allow data backup on both drives simultaneously. Hence, if one should fail, the information can be retrieved from the other.
