The good: Fast processor and 3D graphics; DVD+RW optical drive; offers both touchpad and pointer input options; good sound quality; Bluetooth-enabled.
The bad: Heavy and bulky; short battery life; only one swappable drive bay; relatively expensive; no onboard flash memory card reader.
The bottom line: Inspiron 9100 is probably one of the best notebooks around that can truly replace the desktop PC, offering speed and excellent 3D graphics performance.

Dell scam for a once awesome laptop
by Tanya - Nov 06, 2005

I've had my 9100 for about 17 months and it was an awesome laptop for that period of time. Although it is heavy to carry around and can be very loud, it pretty much replaced my desktop. I'm in college and travel across the country frequently, so it worked well for traveling and doing what I needed to do. Then last week, it just quit. I called Dell, waited an hour for a foreigner who couldn't speak English and they deduced that it was the motherboard. They said they would fix it for a flat fee of $498+tax and then I talked to several computer techs in the area and they could not get the motherboard for less than $827 (when they could get it, that is), making it nearly $1,000 to get it fixed. So here we come back to Dell, which obviously has a scam running on this product, as I understand that there are many similar problems. I'll get it fixed, as it was VERY expensive and I loved it until it just quickly died one day. I just hope that in another 17 months after it's fixed that it won't die again.
