Sony Ericsson's fantastic four

By Juniper Foo

Despite the months-long hype over the Walkman-labeled W800i and the recent launch of the K750i and Z800i, Sony Ericsson still had a few more surprises up its sleeves at today's global press launch held at Singapore's Odeon Towers.

With a day to go before CommunicAsia 2005 opens at the Singapore Expo, Sony Ericsson has opted to start the show early ahead of the pack. The nine phones and four add-ons, of which four are brand new, will target different demographic segments. They will also be differentiated by the last letter tagged at the end of the model name. "i" will identify mobiles for Asia Pacific, Hong Kong, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. "c" will denote handsets headed for the mainland China market. While an "a" code signifies editions intended for US users.

At the media event, the company appeared to be steering interest toward its funky S600i swivel phone, which is clearly designed to deliver maximum fun with a host of entertainment features. These include a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 1.8-inch rotatable display for portrait or landscape 3D gaming, multiplayer peer-to-peer gaming via Bluetooth, music player with stereo speakers, and 64MB of internal RAM.

Jan Wareby, corporate executive vice president and head of Sales and Marketing, added that Sony Ericsson's strategic focus will be on imaging, entertainment and a suite of enterprise features.

The mobile devices can be expected on shelves from Q3 of 2005.
