The good: Clutter-free design; anti-bacterial coating; relatively scratch- and stain-resistant; handy size; sharp display; good-quality speaker; direct Bluetooth printing.
The bad: No memory expansion slot; limited onboard storage capacity; creaky hinge when cover is flipped open; no FM radio.
The bottom line: While the SGH-E640 does not offer anything new in terms of features, its simplistic design, together with high-quality display and sound, makes it an appealing choice for those looking for a functional everyday handset.
Low memory capacity, awful user interfaces but good battery life by Hendrick - Oct 27, 2005
Pros:
1. Small form factor
2. Good memory life - > 4 days standby
3. Keypad customizable for camera.
Cons:
1. Low memory capacity. Only 32MB of SHARED memory with no memory slot.
2. Troublesome UI, e.g. deleting a file takes min 4 keystrokes.
3. Not able to delete MMS templates, which takes up precious SHARED memory.
4. No external multimedia controls. Hassle with MP3 player.
5. Useless User Manual. Cramp menu is hard to read and virtually contains no valuable info. Online forums are better than the manual.
6. No bundled software. Need to download software from the Website.
7. Need to press and hold down Camera key to activate camera. (Why make it dedicated then?)
This phone is great but limited storage by Screamingflea - Oct 18, 2005
I was debating between this and the E730 but finally went with the E640 because of the slick design. I've always wanted to own a clamshell (all my past phones were nokia) and I'm glad I went with the E640. Easy to use (although I have yet to get used to the keypad since I'm a nokia user) and the display is crisp and clear! The 32mb memory is one of the things that took me forever to decide on and the 90mb of the E730... but I decided I didn't need that much space or the radio feature. The price difference was small and the E730 had the USB cable + Samsung cd... but the ugly design of the E730 really bothered me. The only color available in the Philippines is the black one and it looked like cheap plastic. I would have bought it if they had the silver version. Another aspect I was comparing was the keypad. E730 had the nice silver keypad and at first E640's didn't appeal to me (clear plastic on top). The camera feature btw is really good. Lots of effects like sepia, black and white, negative, and different color tones that you can use. And the flash on the phone is excellent especially at night. E640's design decided me. Features are great, camera is clear and I've gotten loads of compliments for my E640.
