Apple iPhone vs. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

By Joseph Hanlon, CNET.com.au

Robot Wars, Transformers, the Terminator vs T-1000. Who doesn't love it when tech monsters fight for our love?

In our last phone face-off we pitted two highly anticipated media playing mobiles against one another, the iPhone and the N96. Apple have since announced some exciting business related expansions for the iPhone to be included in their June firmware update, including compatibility with Microsoft's Exchange servers via Active Sync.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is the new kid on the Windows Mobile block. Announced at the 2008 World Mobile Congress in Spain, the X1, with HSPA and an iPhone-esque touchscreen interface, could be the new handset to show off in the boardroom.

We've thrown their specs together to see which looks better on paper. Let the virtual arm wrestle begin!

The details for both phones, particularly their prices, may change before we see them in stores.

For business users, the inclusion of push email via Microsoft Exchange on both devices makes the decision very difficult. Editable Office documents (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), the QWERTY keyboard and HSPA data speeds will be very important to some users, and may edge the XPERIA X1 out in front.

At the end of the day the real battle may come down to the 3rd party applications available. If the Apple App Store fills with cheap and useful applications then there's no telling how business-friendly the iPhone could become. There's already a wealth of 3rd party apps already available for the Windows Mobile platform.

We'd like to hear your thoughts on the iPhone versus the competition. Leave your comments below and let us know what you think.

Just a small orrection - If the Experia runs wm 6.1, it will also automatically have threaded SMS.

the X-1 will run on windows 6.1 which i'm already using.

windows 6.1 has threaded text so you need to change your table to reflect that. The only advantage the iphone has is the rotation gimmik. Aside from that the x-1 wins hands down.

the amount of software, (free), and mods for windows phones is unbelievable. Also until the next i-phone update, it will have no GPS or 3G. This is useless for a business phone.

iphone for style, sony for substance!

Another correction: "US$399 - 8GB, US$499 8GB (~AU$430, AU$590) - 2 year contract." It really doesn't make sense. Did you guys mean $499 for 16GB?

UBIQUITOUS is a word coined for technologies scope & potential. as tech per se continue to develop with an ever-increasing user-friendliness (thanks to miniaturization), more & more folks are becoming tech-savvy & less fearful of using pc-related gadgets in their everyday lives, even providing a liberating experience to the novice techno user nowadays. it would be interesting to see how these (competing) UI-user interface would change how people relate their needs to their chosen gadget(not vice-versa). the SE-Xperia now seems to offer an AIO package enticing to WM users who would choose the slow path to Appleness or Googleness, a bridging hardware (necessity) with qwerty & all features you might need (for now)...but wait for the iPhone evolution next.

Look at the X1 screen!!! Are those specs right? That's twice the pixel density of a W850, or 4x that of a standard 1600x1200 20" TFT. It has the same resolution as an EEE. So with the the qwerty keyboard I guess the X1 replaces both the iPhone & EEE.
