Two ends of spectrum from HTC

By John Chan

BARCELONA, SPAIN--At the Mobile World Congress, HTC unveiled two new products catering to two very different market segments--the P3470 and Advantage (X7510).

The P3470 is a 2.5G PDA-phone with a compact form factor. It runs on a 200MHz TI processor, has 128MB of RAM and comes with a 2-megapixel camera. These specifications are very similar to the HTC Touch, the key difference being that the P3470 has GPS navigation but not Wi-Fi and TouchFLO. With a raised bezel around the LCD, it is not suited for use with the TouchFLO interface, though it does have the modified Home screen. This makes it more convenient to get to commonly used items without having to remove the stylus.

The new HTC Advantage.
What's known as the HTC Advantage in Europe is actually the Dopod U1000 in our region--a device designed with maximum features for power users. The X7510 is an update of that and now comes with 16GB of flash memory instead of an 8GB MicroDrive in the U1000. Another significant change is the use of haptic feedback in the detachable QWERTY keyboard. This means the keys vibrate when touched to indicate that they have been pressed. This provides tactile feedback in cases where there are touch-sensitive keys instead of physical, depressible ones.

What's particularly interesting is that HTC lists the OS of the Advantage as a "future version of Windows Mobile". The current version of Windows Mobile is 6 and we expect that when launched in March, this handheld will come with version 6.1.

We have yet to receive launch dates and prices for Asia Pacific. In Europe, the P3470 will be available in late February and the Advantage in March.

Read on for more information on the new handhelds.
