New Office Mobile 6.1 may be expensive for some

By John Chan

Microsoft quietly released Office Mobile (OM) 6.1 yesterday, the upgrade for its Windows Mobile (WM) suite of productivity software. This upgrade has been talked about since it was announced in June and was originally slated for a Q3 release. The most significant feature is added support for Office 2007 documents. It's available as a free download for users with the previous version of OM. Here are some key points about the upgrade:

  • It is for devices that already have a version of OM installed
  • Support for Office 2007 documents will be added
  • It is compatible with all WM6 versions and WM 5.0 Pocket PC edition only
  • Some WM6 devices shipped already come with OM6.1, e.g. HTC TyTN II

Users who do not have OM to begin with can purchase OM6.1 separately. It is available from Handango at a staggering US$49.95. Dataviz's Documents To Go, a competing third-party product, costs just US$29.99 and have all the features of OM6.1 including support for Office 2007 documents.

The consideration to buy the suite lies mainly with those using WM6 Standard for smart phones without touchscreens. Depending on the manufacturer, these may not come with OM pre-installed. Some examples are the Asus M530W and Samsung SGH-i600, both of which come with a third-party application for viewing documents.

The reason for this is because OM is an addon and some manufacturers may choose not to include it in their devices to save cost. This now becomes an important consideration for those choosing a new WM smart phone. If having the ability to edit Office documents is important for you, check to see what productivity suite comes with the device first. If not, you may end up paying more for what many may consider to be a basic feature.

There is no such worry for those considering a WM6 Professional PDA-phone, those with touchscreens. According to Microsoft, OM is a built-in component of WM6 Professional so viewing and editing of documents is a default feature.
