It may have taken a while since the Asus P526 was first announced, but it's finally coming to market. The advantage to that of course, is that Asus has managed to put Windows Mobile 6 in it, so users don't have to go through the hassle of an upgrade if it had come with the older Windows Mobile 5.0 preloaded.

It may not have a QWERTY keypad, but having a numeric one is better than nothing at all. In fact, for those switching over from a regular mobile phone, this helps to ease the transition. It isn't just for punching in numbers either. The P526 comes with software to allow keying in text using T9, the predictive text input method most are familiar with on devices like Nokia and Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The regular Windows Mobile text input methods are there too, if you'd rather use its stylus and touchscreen.
One of this handheld's biggest draw is GPS navigation. It uses the SiRFstar III chip, which has proven time and again its capabilities when it comes to getting a satellite lock and accuracy of navigation.
Downside:
Aside from GPS, the other connectivity options on the P526 are pretty drab. It has a quadband GSM radio, but no 3G. What's most glaring is the lack of Wi-Fi even. So getting connected wirelessly is maxed out at EDGE speeds, which is only a viable option if your operator supports it.
Perhaps due to power efficiency, Asus has chosen the 200MHz TI OMAP850 processor for the P526. The handheld might see some strain when in use, especially for those who like to keep multiple applications open all the time.
Outlook:
At S$898, the Asus P526 is not expensive at all. Bargain-hunters will most likely be able to get it even lower with operator discounts. The lack of 3G and Wi-Fi will probably be a deal-breaker for many users. A close competing product will be the Mitac Mio A501, which may debut at an even lower price, but has a smaller screen and no keypad. Expect to see the P526 in stores come early August.
