User Review for Samsung SGH-i780

My i780 never worked from Day 1

Rating: 2 out of 10 (Terrible)
Pros: HSDPA is fast, Good features
Cons: WM6, Forced to use Outlook for my contacts, everything except the phone works!
Opinion:
My i780 has been giving me problems from Day 1. I switched it on and it went into a mode where it recognized the SIM card, but showed no service. I could do everything except make and receive calls. I could access the 3G functions, check e-mail and check and send sms. However it showed no service for the phone and I couldnt see any contacts from my SIM card. The same SIM card worked fine on my SE K608i. The only way out was to do a hard reset and then it seemed to work for a few days. Then I tried installing Navphone PPS (the GPS software that came with the phone) and the phone crashed after installation. Every time it crashes I get a cprog.exe error and it goes back to a mode where I cant make or receive calls since it shows no service. Trying to select a service manually doesnt help either and the only way out is to do a hard reset. The last time it crashed was when I turned it off and turned it on a few minutes later. Finally I took it to the Samsung service center and am still waiting for their call. This phone sucks and although it has all these features, they are useless if a phone cannot make or receive calls without a daily hard reset!

Maybe u got a defect unit, the best way is to get back to the shop and ask for replacement, most shop do accept 1 to 1 exchange for DOA - dead on arrival unit.

Hi vivektanavde,
i feel sorry & u/stand what you have been going through. From the way you describe, i'm pretty darn sure that your set is faulty. I second that if a phone requires even a soft reset let alone hard reset, it's a piece worthless junk! However, i must qualify that i780 is by far the best ever PDA phone i've ever used in the last 5 over years. Do go to www.ppcsg.com to read on the detailed reviews from various hardcore pda/pda-phone users. Believe me, my family, siblings & many friends have switched to using this phone already (more than 10 of us to give you an idea). All said though, samsung should replace a brand unit on the spot (i'm not a technical guy but an idiot would know that the set is faulty from the way you describe). I went to M1 to change my 2nd purchase when the screen flickers. They saw it and immediately replaced a brand new unti + test it in front of me before i left with full satisfaction. If you do not get a reasonable settlement, voice out in www.ppcsg.com and you 'll be pleased & surprised to find hundreds of i780 users rallying behind you.
Cheers & good luck.

correction on my comment,"I second that if a phone requires a soft reset or let alone hard rest ON A DAILY BASIS, it's a piece worthless junk!"

Thanks wiltam7. I bought the phone from a Singtel Roadshow at Plaza Singapura. When I went back to the store asking for an exchange, they referred me to the Samsung Service Centre on Level 4. I turned in the phone last Sunday and after a week, they sent me an sms saying it was repaired. The technician inserted my sim card into the handset and it still gave a cprog.exe error. The technician then restarted the phone and it went into the same no service mode. She said they had upgraded the firmware and tested the handset extensively, yet it did not work with my SIM in. The same SIM works fine in my SE handset. I asked for another unit, but was told that Samsung will try to repair it again. So now I have to wait possibly for another week. I see another user on this forum saying that he/she is having similar problems. So I guess we are plain unlucky.

Hey...that's not fair. I wouldn't & will insist on an exchange. It's obvious that the set is faulty, singtel should exchange 141 & not send you to samsung! You must insist they loan you a set while waiting. Honestly, i feel that you've been mistreated by this singtel store and strongly advise you to write in officially. Why you we pay for a new set yet it becomes a repaired set?! The saying goes...anything that needs repair will never be the same again. Do something! Have you posted in ppcsg.com? Didn't see your posting?!

If it is within 7 days, you can exchange at Singtel. That's what I did for my 1st set. No problem since and I'm loving this phone!!!!
