Star Wars Force FX Lightsabers

Juniper Foo  |  May 20, 2005

In a galaxy not so far away (try earth), where crazy fan boys are willing to cough out hard-earned lucre to own a piece of Star Wars or parade amidst saner fellowmen as Sith Lords or Storm Troopers, the Force FX Lightsaber is one collectible that's guaranteed to bring out the Jedi in anyone. That said, this isn't for dueling purposes. Nor is it a toy. The sticker price alone should cue you in to that. Having said that, these licensed replicas need more than the Force to activate them, like a fresh set of batteries.

On the Light Side, Anakin Skywalker's saber is a Blue Blade from Revenge of the Sith. For those who've turned to the Dark Side, check out Darth Vader's Red Blade from Empire Strikes Back. Or see both blades lighted up

Price: S$235 (US$119)
Availability: Hobby shops, including one at Suntec City; or check out ThinkGeek
Device: Star Wars collectible
Basic specs: Glowing blades with realistic power-up/down effects, authentic sound effects digitally recorded from movie, motion sensor-controlled sound effects, power-up, idle hum, clash, and power-down, durable metal hilt, sturdy polycarbonate blade attached to hilt, custom-designed display stand

in response to your question of the blade removal. no they are not designed to be removed. however i have recently figured out how to safely remove all of the electronics, which the blade is also attached, leaving only the handle. this procedure is reversable too, bringing your force fx lightsaber back to perfect operating condition.

Hi Quiwanvader, I have a Master Replica Anakin Light Saber (old EL model I think, 2002?) and I'm trying to diassemble it to remove the blade but I'm afraid of damaging it. So far I removed the handle tube to access the battery(x6)compartment + the black PCV coupler + the small screw usually covered by this black coupler, and the big torx screw of the top chrome ring that partly envelop the power switch. Now I"m a bit stumped. Would you be so kind as to let me know how you did it. ouellette.d@videotron.ca

I wish they would lower the price

can you actually fight with them or are they too fragile

Supremium says...
Absolutely. But be careful. Striking it very hard in the middle of the blade could snap it directly in half. (not a pretty site, with the sparking and flashing) My employer at GameStop had a difficult time snapping one. He had to strike a beam with all his strength to shatter it. Also, dueling will cause some miner white marks on the blade.

Also, there's some awesome video of an on-stage duel at master replicas.com (M.R. is the manufacturer.) Just click the Force Fx link, then go to the "See it in action" link

Dude these things are awesome!! Can they be used for duelling ar not? Man I wish they were abit cheaper!! I want one!! :(

Ok, i know alot about these so listen up anyone with questions. First of all, the blade is made of glass and it cannot be dueled with or banged against anything. However, they are strong enough for light Jedi-style swinging, twirling, and slashing. The blade is similar to "bar" signs which use neon gas and electrical currents. AS FOR PRICE!: This piece is less expensive than this site shows. It is actually sold for $110 to $130. The handle of this piece is high-quality polished metal, almost exactly like that of a real lightsaber. It comes with a stand so you can display it on a mantle or table. The closest thing to a real lightsaber this side of the galaxy. I hoped this info helped, your father, Darth Vader.

Supremium says...
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! Where'd you get this info. The blade is made of a polycarbonate, similar to the plastic used as shields by the SWAT team. In fact, My manager backed his pickup onto one, and it was only dingged. As for the lights, it is not neon. It uses an array of 64 led's. The hilt is 1 1/3 the size of the studio prop. If anyone would like reliable updates, email me, kerrim@cox.net.

the blade is made of a sturdy polycarbonate, not glass, that is totally wrong. i have the luke esb and my lil bro has the vader esb. they say not to be dueled with but me and my bro play a round with them. not hitting that hard but the blad is strong

Darth Vader is a fool. Not the real one, the guy posting here. As was previously states, the blade is made of polycarbonate with a string of 62 LED lights that sequentially light up, giving the growing and retracting effect. Just so you guys know, polycarbonate is the same stuff they make bulletproof glass out of. Ive dueled a few times with the force fx, and whacked as hard as I could. No dents, dings, or scrapes. In the US, you can buy them for under $100 at Borders Books and for $100 at Best Buy. Final comment: While they are pretty cool, I made my own lightsaber because it cost about $40 less, looks cooler, and I can do whatever I want with it, as I have already specialized the blade to be removable, opposed to the bad feature of the force fx where it is "permanently" attached to the hilt. May The Force Be With You.

Cool, I have made my own lightsaber hilt, and I am wondering what you used for the lights?

man its off da chain! the noise and the cool look. i just got my sexy darth vader fx and man, all of ya need one. the price is worth it and its realy stylish forget about the not being able ta duel. itd be a waste of mony to just swing lightly and gracefully like a ballarina, i duel with my bro a million times a day(who has an anakin skywalker fx) and we can hit really really really really really hard sometimes and we get no scratches, dents, or cracks. this is a must-have collectible for playa hata star wars peeps, regular fans, and of coarse ya can't forget the die hard fans.

force fx lightsabers are all over, awesome. i beat my older sister with my anakin lightsaber. then she beat me up... but it was really fun.

Anonymous says...
i wanna buy one of those the double lightsaber

Supremium says...
Surprise surprise, you might just be in luck. In America, Master Replicas (manufacturer)is releasing a few new sabers, and rereleasing another. Yoda, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and re-releasing Luke's ep. VI. Darth Maul's is sold as two, and is connected by a study plastic ring. For ANY questions, email me, kerrim@cox.net.

Hey yoda's brother im curious as to how you made your saber

Anonymous says...
I just got the Vader EPV saber and I'm extremely impressed. It feels so cool in your hands and the sounds are great. The blade seems pretty tough, and I've heard of lots of people dueling with them with no problems. I'm not going to fight with mine. I'll use the cheap hasbro electronic sabers for that. Anyway, if you're a fan and you want a realistic lightsaber, this is what you've been looking for.

i am a record producer.i made the head of a record company buy me anakin and darth sabers in order for me to finish a record i was workin on.they are the best thing that has ever happened to me.very durable for dueling, just don't hit any hard objects around you.mine are getting a little broken in,but that just makes me less scared to really play w/ them!

Anonymous says...
Just recieved luke skywalker fx and the clash does not work has anybody had this problem.

Supremium says...
Some lightsabers have defective sound boards. If you put fresh batteries in it, and you don't get better results, return it to the retailer you purchased it from.

Anonymous says...
Dude at shop said hit your sister over the head with it he was right. clash now works

these things are bad to the bone. my friends got anakins, walking around at night, these people stopped us in a car to check it out. they were way impressed. you'll get a lot of attention by having one of these. im going to get vaders.

I heard the blade was actually made from reinforced glass, as in bullet proof. And I've infact seen a video of two guys fighting with them. It was pretty sweet. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

Supremium says...
The blade itself does not include ANY glass, however is made of bullet-proof polycarbonate.

I got to use the Luke and Vader lightsabers for the first time at my friends house last weekend and they rock! The "Fun Factor" was so high I bought the Vader and the Windu sabers today and I plan on taking my friend on in a two-saber-per-person duel. Taking these bad boys outside at night is the only to go. One more thing, has anyone seen the Windu sabers work? Are they as cool as the other two? I'm just throwing that out because I already bought it of course.

When my friend and I Dueled each other, we didn't really swing that hard (most of the time anyway) and we didn't have any problems with them, but we both are not sure about hitting too hard even though the blade is pretty darn sturdy, last thing you want is to crack them or break them off somehow and end up throwing $100 down the garbage, am I right? But I honestly think that if you are careful, you can duel all you want.

Anonymous says...
ok i dont have any money what so ever like i had 50 bucks once but i caught it on fire .......i want one of these things for like 50- 85 dollars if any one knows a cheap place e-mail them to me

Anonymous says...
first of all, anyone who wants to know anything about these lightsabers listen up. The blade is made of reinforced polycarbonate, a fairly strong plastic, much like glass only stronger. Dueling is ok, but you shouldnt hit to hard or they will break. The blade is nothing like a neon sign, is has 64 LED lights inside the blade, 5 ultra sensitive motion sensors, and 6 different sound effects. It costs $120 (in us currency). The saber itself is aluminum plated with chrome, that is why it costs so much.and, it takes 6 aa batteries, not three. That is it. Its awsome.

Supremium says...
not ALL sabers require 6 aa's. only some. The number is specified on the box.
