Personal Cooling System 2.0

Juniper Foo  |  Aug 10, 2004

If keeping cool in Singapore's infernal heat is a personal crusade for you, this mini aircon device claims to keep you about 6 degrees colder than the surrounding temperature. Resembling a clunky neck brace, you fill it with water, place it around your neck and hit the on button. The motorized fan and aluminum cooling plates then go to work for up to 4 hours. One online user who trialed the gizmo said it chills the skin over key blood vessels so you feel cooler overall, taking about 10 minutes for the effect to kick in. We say at nearly S$52 (batteries not included), it may be lots cheaper to get a brain freeze with a convenience store Slushie.

Price: US$29.95
Availability: Sharper Image online
Device: Wearable cooling system
Basic specs: Motorized fan, two power settings, 2oz water bottle, 1 AA battery good for about 4 hours, 284g empty, 397g filled, in silver or cobalt blue, 1-year warranty

What a useless review. Why not actually TEST the item being reviewed? If I want a product description, I'll go to the retail site.

I have tried these on in the store. They do seem cool to the neck. How it actually performs? This guy in a wheelchair seems to say they work. ra.disabilityexpo.com...

I had one. It broke after 12 hours of use. It hardly even made me feel any better. Just my neck. Worthless.

I bought one of these and it did pretty much nothing. I assumed that it was defective, so I exchanged it, but the second one also does pretty much nothing. The only time it makes me feel cooler is when the water leaks out and dribbles down my chest. A wet cloth on the back of one's neck would do the job much better.

I live in New York City, where tolerable summer weather is rare and humidity is very high,so I was eagerly anticipating receiving this product. I wore it this morning both outdoors and on a steamy hot subway platform. The only thing it did was wet the back of my hair! The so-called "cooling plates" that fit around your neck, far from cooling me, actually WARMED UP with my body heat. Totally useless, unless you like a spoiled hairstyle and water dripping onto your clothes. This is being returned. Zero stars. And a big raspberry to the Sharper Image for marketing this sham of a product.

QUITE SIMPLY, A WORTHLESS PIECE OF HIGH-PRICED JUNK THAT CAUSES MORE DISCOMFORT THAN PLEASURE.

I AGREE... this contraption is WORTHLESS... I was very excited to find it since I thought it would be WONDERFUL to give to my son who is on a ship in The Persian Gulf and the flight deck and hangar is incredibly and almost unbearably hot.. My husband used it while cutting grass and just said TAKE IT BACK...
