Most professional photographers usually discover photography as students, and hone their skills over the years before achieving recognition. Which is why we are casting a spotlight on young photobuffs from various tertiary photographic societies by providing a platform for them to showcase their works.

This shot is part of a series I am still working on called "Bus rides". Shooting people on buses is quite tough especially when you want to capture a candid moment in a small enclosed space. One trick is to pretend to shoot the chairs or test the camera, then to re-adjust the framing and snap the shot at the right.

This is somewhere that I want to be. Singapore has hidden places that are very different compared with the usual urban surroundings we are used to. To get the lalang to "glow", I shot it with the sun behind and shining through it. To get the details in the sky, you may want to underexpose the photo by 1 or 2/3 stop.

Sakura is one of the icons of Japan and one of the things on the "must see" list when one visits the country. The blooms of these pink delicate flowers caught my attention. The out-of-focus background brings out the beauty of these flowers.

It had just rained and the light from the Japanese lantern cast a soft red glow on the naturally pink Sakura, giving everything a different look and feel.

This was my first time out shooting after getting my camera. I saw how the light rays appeared over the cathedral. The image was converted to black-and-white to highlight the sun rays.

This natural phenomenon occurred over my house and I was glad I was able to snap a shot of it.

I love traveling and have always wanted to be a travel documentary photographer. By looking at this shot, it gives me a sense of calmness. Just sit back, relax, enjoy a cool drink with a straw hat under a tree and listen to the sound of waves. Don't you wish you were somewhere in Phuket now?

I have always been fascinated by food photography. One morning I decided to make breakfast for myself and shoot it. Look at the sunshine yellow from the egg.

For this shot, I was trying to bring out the different shades of brown in her hair. The sunlight helped to illuminate and give contrast to the shot.

To me, this is how abstract nature can be. Although art is undefined, I am fine with it as long as the picture tells a good story.

Though our way of lives are poles apart, I realized many Singapore and Vietnam children have at least one thing in common: The love for animals. This cat is the pet of a 6 year old girl living in Hanoi. We may not speak the same language but where ever you go, you will always find animal lovers--things like these that bring us together.

You would be charged S$0.50 to sit on this buffalo for about 2 minutes. What struck me was how there was a rope going through its nose. It was only when I did some research that I found out the painful process of piercing a hole through the nose and feeding a rope through it. Is this cruelty of animals justified?

It's such a pity that even in the 21st century, issues like race and ethnicity have yet to be resolved. Laundry should be the only thing separated by color.

I have been studying at Sunset Way, Clementi, for two years now. Almost everyday, without fail, this elderly gentleman would stop at the same seat and rest on it for about 2 hours before heading home. After two years, he finally spoke to me. "You'd better take care of your laptop, camera and all the stuff you are carrying. The foreign workers here snatch your stuff and run off."
