Photography can be liken to fine art. Like a painter, the photographer valiantly wields all the tools at his command in an effort to reproduce the colors of reality on his chosen canvas. Jimmy Liew is one such shuttle bug and here's his artistic take on life.

The images you see from this feature have been reproduced with permission from Jimmy Liew. If you wish to be featured in our interviews or know any photo buffs who may be interested, write to us, and we'll get back to you.

A little bit about me:
I started shooting when I was just a student in primary school after my Dad passed me an old beat-up Nikon camera that he had. I kept on taking pictures till I couldn’t afford the cost of buying and developing films.

It was only after I bought my first digital camera--the Nikon Coolpix 5700 that I picked up my childhood hobby again. I like to be out on the streets shooting anything and everything, and with digital photography, I can take pictures to my heart’s content until the camera runs flat or the memory card is full--whichever comes first. Then it’s back to my Mac to select the better ones and touch them up.

To me, photography is like art. Each shot is like a fabric for me and Photoshop is like my paint brushes. I like to tweak the photos around to see what else I can do with each photo before loading them up to Flickr or my own site for all to see.

Sometimes stripping a photo of its colors makes it more alive. At least that's how I see this group of photos I have chosen. Having colors just distract the elements in the photo that I'd like to capture. There are also certain times, a photo might not look good in color but strip it off its color, it transforms and springs out in a totally angle. Having most of the photo in black and white, with a sprinkle of color, will also bring out the subject you want to feature in the photo.

So my advise is--go dig out your old photos and try looking at it without any colors--it might have a different story to tell.

This series of black and whites are just one way one can beautify their photos. Be bold and you’ll be surprised.

The mob
This was purely a chance encounter with this group at the Cenotaph, Padang. Their dressing and the location was a pure match.

Anderson bridge
Please do watch the traffic before trying something similar. I like how the shadows span across part of the bridge as I captured it on a Sunday evening.

Esplanade car park
I like how the glass wall refracts the lights from the underpass between Citylink and Esplanade. I waited for the person to walk past to make the silhouette the focus point.

Esprit vertical catwalk
The first time the troupe came to Singapore and staged the Vertical Catwalk alongside the facade of Raffles City. The clouds that day were just so fluffy that it made the artist looked as if she was flying.

Footsteps
The footsteps along the roof top pool at Vivocity faded off as fast as the kids that ran around the pool area.

Fullerton hotel
I was very fortunate to catch the hotel name being reflected on a tiny pool of water after an afternoon rain.

Chapel cross
I love to shoot cloud formations, especially during evenings when the setting sun creates strong contrasts. Add in a suitable subject and you might get a good photo.

Looking at myself
A cliche as it might sound, but being there at the right place and the right time to capture this photo was what happen when I captured this precious photo at the National Museum.

Rays of light
Bringing your camera to the beach might not be the best idea but catching sunsets at Krabi beach without your camera will be a loss.

City sunset
Another reason why I love sunsets and clouds. Our cityscape has been taken by many, but having such a dramatic sunset framing our Shenton area is a blessing.

Two strings
Taken at my brother’s new gallery at Changi Beach. I like how the plain wall becomes a fabric itself for this photograph.

Faces
These two mannequins outside Zara boutique at Ngee Ann City became my models for this shot. Making it black and white allows me to darken the background to isolate the mannequins. Having strong spotlights shining down helped too.
