Great first timer DSLR
Aug 15, 2009Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: image quality, easy adjustments, 720p and 1080p video, lcd
Cons: a bit plasticky body, live view (LCD) focusing a bit slow
Opinion:
Last used a film SLR more than 5 years ago, a nikon N50/F50. Since then, been using canon compact digicams while waiting for DSLRs to be affordable with the right features. Was thinking of getting the Powershot SX1, but finally got the Canon 500d. Easy to use menu, once you read the manual. Image quality is awesome, colour settings are easy to adjust. The IS Lens kit helps in low light shooting. While the viewfinder focusing is very quick, Live view (thru LCD) focusing is not that fast but still acceptable. Lastly of course the video shooting, even though some may complain of the only 20fps in 1080p, I would rather shoot at 720p 30fps for the smaller size files. Video quality is just awesome. Can't wait to add Canon L lenses to my kit.
Brilliant DSLR

I want this dSLR
Jun 26, 2009Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: Performance & Image
Cons: Poor Video Recording
Opinion:
I had a chance to work on this camera for more than 1 hour in Canon Exclusive Experiance Center in India, and after using it for 10 min, I wanted to own this camera.
This camera has once again bleaked the line between entry level & mid level dSLR's.
Excellent performance with fast auto focus, though auto focus points small compared to other dSLR's works well. Good image quality, and color reproduction vibrant.
The only thing I did not like was video recording, comparing it to SX1 I own, it does not have stereo recording like sx1, also at full hd it records at 20fps where as sx1 records video at 30fps.
well it is primary a dSLR, and not a video shooter, and this where it excels over sx1.
This is a great DSLR for first time buyers
May 11, 2009Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Easy to use; High mega pixel, HDMI; Live View display, High ISO; DIGIC4;contrast correction; RAW image files
Cons: Optional lenses are expensive; short movie recording lengths
Opinion:
I used this camera at Fortress in Hong Kong. I was originally looking at the PowerShot SX1is before this camera was released. However, the EOS 500D has made me change my mind about what to get. This camera is easy to use. The LCD panel is bright and easy to see. The image quality is fantastic.
Regarding the price, you get a better deal by purchasing a kit rather than getting the lenses and body separately. The kit with the 18 - 55mm lense is selling for HK$6,880 in most camera shops in Hong Kong. The body alone cost HK$ 6,000. When purchased separately, the lens costs nearly HK$5,000.
Overall, I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to switch from a compact digital camera to a DSLR.
excellent product
