First Take

By Rich Trenholm, CNET.co.uk

There are dSLRs, and then there are cameras that look like a dSLR. The Fujifilm FinePix S100FS falls into the latter category, and a non-discerning eye probably won't be able to tell the difference. But for the advanced photographers, using this shooter shouldn't be much a problem, with extensive shooting modes and even an option to simulate the color quality of film. If you want to move up the ladder in photography but are not willing to plonk down large amounts for a dSLR, the S100FS could very well be a solution. ...

A great all round camera at half the price of an equivalent SLR

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Great handling, good high iso results, wide lense range, image stabilisation.
Cons: Chromatic aboration needs to be cleaned up on the pc in many shots.
Opinion:
I bought this camera to replace my S9600 and apart from the need to clean up chromatic aberration in many shots (a few seconds in Paint Shop Pro X2) its performance is excellent. The lens range 28mm-400mm covers just about anything and with optical image stabilisation I've taken sharp shots at 400mm, 1/100th.sec.

For outdoor trips and vaction photos, the gadget is pretty handy and easy to use. Had great pleasure handling the camera.

Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: The ability to produce good contrast photos is well-exhibited and the clarity is pretty good. Zooming in has been a great advantage without carrying any heavy equipment.
Cons: The built-in flash is pretty useless and a compability external flash is hard to come by.
Opinion:
In general, I am pretty pleased with the camera. May take little time to learn usage of the various functions but it is pretty easy to pick up. If a simpleton like me can do it, anybody can do it!
Sharp pictures with good color is taken. Excellent contrast can be viewed. Majority of the photos that I have taken has really WOWed me. So I am a happy man with a happy camera...
