CNET Asia Review
Very good
The good: Compact and lightweight; fast and responsive; intelligently designed with shooting-friendly layout. 7.8
out of 10View score
The bad: Second status LCD has been eliminated; slow kit lens; no spot metering; poor exposure of backlit subjects.
The bottom line: The Canon EOS 400D remains a very good first dSLR, but ultimately a disappointing followup to the 350D, which cedes its lead to the Nikon D80.

Topnotch Image Quality, Reliability Under Almost Every Condition
Jul 5, 2008Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Image is crisp and clean almost all the time, fast operation, not too bulky
Cons: Doesnt have live view that most people prefer to use when taking photos...
Opinion:
I don't know what made CNET Asia give this camera a lower than 8 rating, maybe it's because they really don't have a true-blue photographer who can critique DSLR performance the way websites like dpreview.com does it. This camera is very highly recommended in nearly every credible camera review website. And it's because of quick performance, enhanced usability, idiot-proof menu, crisp and clear image quality and available of accessories after-market.
The kit lens is standard but does take decent photos. It can perform pretty good macro shots as well as very good zoom capability, especially for landscapes and scenery. Like every DSLR, it takes some getting used to, but after about a month of using it, I now understand why Canon is the market-leader. Yes, Nikon does have better offerings on various segments, but at entry-level, this Digital Rebel XTi or 400D will be hard to beat.
