Nikon introduces the D300s and D3000

By Leonard Goh, CNET Asia

Nikon's dSLRs have always been a favorite among photographers for their reliability, superb image reproduction and good camera build. While main competitor Canon squeeze features and higher-resolution sensors into its shooters, Nikon has taken a slightly different approach to its current lineup in terms of frame rates and focusing.

It has been two years since the D300 was announced, and today, it is replaced by the D300s. The upgrades, which include an HD movie-recording function, slightly faster burst mode and dual memory media slots, may appear minor. But these are features which enthusiasts have been waiting for in a semi-professional, camera so Nikon may have hit the sweet spot for this camera's target audience. However, the D300s retains the same 12-megapixel sensor as its predecessor, so that may put the dSLR at a slight disadvantage when compared with other snappers in its class such as the 15-megapixel Canon EOS 50D.

The D3000 is an entry-level dSLR targeted at users who want to upgrade from a point-and-shoot. To make this shooter more appealing to amateurs, Nikon has implemented a new Guide mode to assist beginners in selecting the right settings and functions for the best shot. The D3000 succeeds the D40. Below is a quick comparison between these two models.
