Panasonic unveils four wide-angle shooters

By Leonard Goh, CNET Asia

Without a doubt, Panasonic is one of the biggest players in the compact camera market. The Japanese firm has a good lineup of shooters to appeal to different users, ranging from FS for the beginners to FX for the casual shutterbugs, and LX for enthusiasts. To keep up with the competition, the company is introducing two new series--FP and ZR--to appeal to a wider range of consumers.

The four new shooters, the Lumix DMC-FP8, ZR1, FZ35 and FX65, will feature Panasonic's new optical image stabilizer, dubbed Power O.I.S. The company claims the new system is able to counter twice the amount of hand shake compared with its previous Mega O.I.S., and this can help users to snap sharper pictures in low-light conditions.

The Lumix DMC-FP8's looks are a huge deviation from Panasonic's usual designs for its compact cameras. The 12-megapixel shooter features a periscope-like lens design to keep it slim and it has a 28mm wide-angle optics witg a 4.6x zoom range. From its specifications, it appears the FP8 is similar to the rugged Lumix DMC-FT1, except that it doesn't have tough features such as waterproof and shockproof capabilities.

The Lumix DMC-ZR1 is the newest addition to the company's compact long-zoom family and it will complement the TZ series. Although the zoom range for the ZR1 is lesser at 8x (compared with 12x on the TZ7), it retains the same 25mm ultra-wide-angle optics and HD video-recording function as its brethren.

For advanced photographers, the Lumix DMC-FZ35 ought to satisfy. Succeeding the popular FZ28, the new camera is upgraded with a higher-resolution image sensor (12 from 10 megapixels). Other specifications for the FZ35, such as the 2.7-inch LCD and 18x zoom lens, remain similar to its predecessor.

There is also the Lumix DMC-FX65 which replaces the FX48. However, the new point-and-shoot's upgrade is incremental, featuring only the new image stabilizer system.

These four cameras are expected to be available by end August, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
