Fujifilm unleashes new EXR compacts, 3D camera

By Leonard Goh

Fujifilm is on a rampage today, announcing a grand total of eight cameras. One of these is the 3D point-and-shoot which we saw last year. There are also two advanced snappers which utilize the EXR sensor technology that made its debut in the FinePix F200EXR. For beginners, there are four models with varying specifications to meet different needs.

The FinePix Real 3D W1 is a revised version of the 3D camera prototype which the company showcased at the Photokina tradeshow in Germany last year. The specifications haven't changed much, but the shooter's exterior has gone through a major overhaul. The W1 now looks much sleeker, though with its 304g (with battery and memory media) weight we won't exactly classify it as light. That said, this is still a good attempt from Fujifilm to differentiate itself from competitors. Click here for our hands-on with the W1.

The FinePix S200EXR succeeds the popular S100FS bridge camera. The new model has been upgraded with the new EXR sensor and promises to deliver equal or superior pictures compared with dSLRs. The S200EXR also features two new functions: Pro Focus mode and Pro Lowlight mode. These options will snap two to four shots consecutively, and then combined to create a picture with either shallow depth-of-field or reduced noise.

The FinePix F70EXR signals Fujifilm's foray into the compact, long-zoom category. Offering the same 12-megapixel EXR sensor found in the S200EXR, the F70EXR has a 10x optical zoom lens and sensor-shift image stabilizer. The Pro Focus/LowLight mode can be found in this unit, too.

The Z-series gets refreshed with the FinePix Z35, a point-and-shoot designed for teenagers and young adults. The 10-megapixel snapper is only 19.1mm slim and has 3x optical zoom. To make it more user-friendly for social-networking addicts, there is a Blog mode which resizes images for uploading to the Web.

For the budget-conscious, Fujifilm is introducing the FinePix A220, A170, J27 and J30. These stylish entry-level models have 3x optical zoom lenses and 2.7-inch displays. The only differences are in the sensor resolutions and types of batteries used.

Fujifilm told CNET Asia that the launch date for the 3D shooter has yet to be confirmed in Asia, but other sources have pointed to a September rollout. The price for this dual-lens camera was not available at press time, too. For the other seven shooters, the company said these will hit shelves in Asia by early August, with pricing to be announced at a later date.
