Olympus announces seven point-and-shoots

By Leonard Goh

Last week, Olympus refreshed its Mju Tough lineup with the Tough-6010. But that's not all from the Japanese firm. Today, the company has announced seven point-and-shoots targeted mainly at casual shutterbugs. However, the specifications for these cameras are not in the least bit shabby. Most of these shooters tout wide-angle optics and feature new creative filter effects such as Fish-eye and Sketch.

The Mju 7020 and Mju 7010 lead the pack with 7x optical zoom lenses. which are widest at 28mm. Both shooters have 12-megapixel image sensors and sleek, stylish bodies. The differences between these cameras are minor: The 7020 has a 3-inch LCD and HDMI output, while the 7010 has a 2.7-inch display.

Olympus is also offering end users an ultra-wide-angle glass with the FE-5020. This snapper boasts a 24mm lens with 5x optical zoom. The significance of this 12-megapixel camera is that it is targeted at beginners, while other snappers with such wide-angle lenses (such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 and Samsung NV24HD) are usually reserved for enthusiasts.

The FE-4000 and FE-4010 both have 26mm wide-angle lenses which are typically not found in entry-level compact cameras. Such differentiation is advantageous for Olympus and may even strengthen its presence in the point-and-shoot market. Also in the lineup are the FE-26 and FE-46, basic point-and-shoots which employ AA-sized batteries for power.

Olympus said these seven cameras will be available in August, with prices to be announced closer to launch.
