Sony expands its Cyber-shot lineup

By Leonard Goh

Sony has been a leader in designing some of the sleekest and most stylish shooters on the market, and it clearly intends to keep this position with its latest Cyber-shot offerings. However, it is not scrimping on features for these shooters. From the literature provided, we noticed that the company is placing more emphasis on HD video recording, with four out of eight new cameras capable of capturing high-quality videos. The Japanese outfit has also updates to its H-series for enthusiasts, as well as two entry-level units targeted at beginners.

The most striking model has to be the HD video-enabled Cyber-shot DSC-T900. We got our mitts on a prototype unit and have to say that it is much slimmer than its predecessor, the T500. The new shooter also gets a resolution upgrade from 10 to 12 megapixels, but we noticed the zoom range has been reduced from 5x to 4x for the T900. Perhaps the slimmer chassis was a restriction for the lens components, but we're sure fashionistas wouldn't mind compromising the focal length for a stunning point-and-shoot. The Cyber-shot T90 is a scaled-down model of the T900 and has a smaller 3-inch touchscreen LCD.

The Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is Sony's superzoom offering, with 10x optical zoom which extends from 38mm to 380mm. Travelers will find the long zoom optics useful for their journeys. The 10-megapixel shooter also comes with 720p-quality video recording.

The Japanese company is broadening its W-series with three point-and-shoots, namely the Cyber-shot DSC-W290, W270 and the W230. The W290 and W270 can capture HD-quality videos, and the main distinguishing factor between the doppelgangers would be their LCD sizes: The W290 has a 3-inch LCD while the W270 has a 2.7-inch display. The W230 is a run-of-the-mill shooter with a decent 4x optical zoom and 30mm wide-angle lens.

Additions to the entry-level S-series are the Cyber-shot DSC-S980 and S930, which come with 12-megapixels and 10-megapixel resolution, respectively.

Sony was not able to confirm when these shooters will be available, but we're pretty sure they'll be on display at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) tradeshow in Las Vegas next month.
