Top 5 point-and-shoots for ladies

By Leonard Goh

Some point-and-shoots are more masculine-looking, having been engineered within a solid chassis and painted in a serious shade. Sure, ladies can use these shooters, too, but some would prefer more color choices or a smaller and lighter camera. Slim and compact shooters that are bursting with features are therefore the best options for those who want a fun snapper that doesn't spell boring.

1.  Canon PowerShot E1

Although Canon UK earlier announced that the PowerShot E1 was "designed by women, for women", Canon Singapore told CNET Asia that the E1 is suitable for teenagers, too. Apparently, different regions will market this camera to different target audiences. The curvy couture and pastel hues lend a feminine touch to the shooter, but don't be deceived by its cartoonish facade. Under its hood is a 10-megapixel sensor coupled with 4x optical zoom. Framing is done via the optical viewfinder or the 2.5-inch LCD.

Why it's suitable: The pastel hues and cute styling should appeal to the younger crowd seeking for a fun-looking shooter.

2.  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700

CNET Asia rating: 8.0 out of 10
The good: Attractive design; large, useful feature set; nice 3.5-inch LCD; fast performance.
The bad: Touchscreen not for everyone; soft images.
The bottom line: Part smart-looking snapshot camera, part 4GB portable digital photo album, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 will satisfy those who like showing off their pictures as much as they like taking them.

Why it's suitable: The fashion-conscious will agree with the slim profile of this shooter, and the 4GB of internal memory sweetens the deal.

3.  Samsung NV24HD

CNET Asia rating: 7.8 out of 10
The good: 24mm ultra-wide-angle lens; HD-video recording; stylish design.
The bad: 3.6x zoom only; no battery charger supplied; proprietary port for charging and data transfer.
The bottom line: The NV24HD is a stunning camera, but the performance is only typical of the usual point-and-shoot.

Why it's suitable: Although it is clad in black, the sleek curves and sophisticated look should go down well with those who are looking for something professional. To top it off, this point-and-shoot offers extensive features for every shooting situation.

4.  Olympus Mju 1060

First take
In this season of offerings, we've noticed two growing trends among manufacturers: Touchscreen-enabled or ultra-high resolution point-and-shoots. But Olympus latest darling in its Mju family, the Mju 1060 has neither despite being the successor to the flagship Mju 1010. It has only slight upgrades such as scene recognition and a larger display. So does this new shooter have what it takes to pit itself against other more sophisticated compacts?

Why it's suitable: Cameras with long zoom range usually look boring, but not this Olympus. It has 7x optical zoom, sensor-shift image stabilizer and a few color options to choose from.

5.  Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS

CNET Asia rating: 7.6 out of 10
The good: Great image quality; minimal shutter lag; speedy performance; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder
The bad: No manual exposure controls; slow flash recycle time
The bottom line: Canon's IXUS 80 IS adds optical image stabilization to last year's hit IXUS 70, while delivering just as impressive image quality.

Why it's suitable: Available in several hues, the IXUS 80 IS is also very compact. Beneath the stylish facade is a good set of features that even casual shutterbugs can snap great pictures with.
