Nikon's new trio of shooters

By Leonard Goh

It seems the market for ultrazoom compact cameras is going to get tighter with the entrance of Nikon's Coolpix P80. With an 18x optical zoom, it's likely to be compared with Olympus' SP570UZ (20x optical zoom) or Fujifilm's S8100fd (also 18x optical zoom). Perhaps what sets this 10.1-megapixel shooter apart from the rest is its Sports Continuous Mode, which lets you snap 30 consecutive shots at 13fps (3 megapixels or lower).

Building on the success of the S51c and S51, Nikon is introducing the successors to these two models. Bumping up the image resolution from 8 to 9 megapixels, the S52c and S52 also have a maximum ISO sensitivity of 3,200, twice that of their predecessor. The main difference between these two new units is the Wi-Fi feature built into the S52c. With the S52c, you can upload images directly from the camera to Nikon's image storing/sharing site, my Picturetown, from a wireless hotspot.

The P80 and S52 will be available by end April in Asia Pacific, while the S52C will be on shelves only in mid-May. Pricing for these cameras were not available at press time, but keep a lookout on this space as we will update the information once we have it.
