Snapshots: Kevin Yang

By Edvarcl Heng, CNET Asia

Though it is generally said that youth is wasted on the young, Kevin Yang certainly didn't spent his sitting on his thumbs. Instead, he literally went out there and worked his heart out. But rather than shooting our mouths off with superlatives, we let Yang's pictures do the talking. If you want to see more of his works, check out his Website.

The images you see from this feature have been reproduced with permission from Kevin Yang. If you wish to be featured in our interviews or know any photo buffs who may be interested, write to us, and we'll get back to you.

Name:
Kevin Yang
Equipment:
Canon 30D with a 135mm F2 primes lens and the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 photo printer which I use instead of going to a lab because the speed and quality of prints are comparable to what I get from a lab, if not better. The Photosmart Pro B9180 prints fast and its eight-color HP Vivera pigment inks provide the accuracy and range of colors that I need for my photos.
Photographer's note:
I was awarded the Silver Award at the Student Creative Awards 2005 for this series of photos, titled "Inside A HDB Toilet". The photos provide a more evocative look at a place which is essential in our daily lives, but is taken for granted. I always enjoy looking for beauty in imperfection, and the humble HDB toilet provides a platform for that.

His profile:
Though he started late, Yang took the camera plunge back when he was still 18. And he worked hard at his new hobby, too, as he straddled his schoolwork at the University with his position as a commercial photography assistant. By the time he graduated in 2006, Yang had already garnered a sizeable clientele list and, with that under his belt, he started immersing himself in photography as a full-time profession.

And his devotion to picture-taking obviously paid off when he won honors at the Crowbar Awards, an international student creative competition, in 2005 and 2006. Yang was also one of the 14 photographers in Singapore to be commissioned by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts to contribute images to a coffee table book, which was presented to international delegates during the International Monetary Fund World Bank Meeting in September 2006.

Besides juggling all that, Yang is also the film director and director of photography for his graduating short film titled "September" which was awarded the Media Development Authority Book Prize for Best Graduating Project in 2006.

Scrub
A shot of the toilet brush juxtaposed against walls. I was drawn by the symmetry and balance of the lines.
