Canon coughs up new EOS, IXUSes and PowerShots

By Damian Koh

A total of six cameras were announced today prior to the annual PMA photo imaging show on March 8. The new EOS 1D Mark III stole the limelight with Canon coining the shooter as the culmination of 20 years of the EOS system.

Canon EOS 1D Mark III
We've seen desktops and notebooks running on dual-core systems. With that in mind, the 10.1-megapixel EOS 1D Mark III, too, is powered by a pair of Digic III image processors enabling a top continuous shooting rate of 10 frames per second. Instead of using a full-frame CMOS sensor like the 1Ds Mark II, the 1D Mark III employs an APS-H-size (28.1 x 18.7mm) CMOS sensor similar to the 1D Mark II N. There's a crop factor of 1.3x, meaning the new EF 16-35mm F2.8L II USM lens will have an effective focal range of between 20.8mm and 45.5mm.

Other features include the dust management solution Canon dubs the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, a new autofocus system with 45 autofocus points and 19 of them being cross-type configurations, and a micro-adjustment feature that allows for fine changes to the AF point. There's also a Live View function (Fujifilm's FinePix S5 Pro has a 30-second Live View feature, too) that lets the user focus and compose a frame on the 3.0-inch LCD.

Along with the new EOS, Canon also introduced the EF 16-35mm F2.8L II USM lens, a Speedlite 580EX II external flash unit, a wireless file transmitter WFT-E2A and the Original Data Security Kit OSK-E3. The EOS 1D Mark III is expected to be available in Japan from late May with initial production capped at 5,000 units per month.

Canon PowerShot TX1
On the consumer end, Canon has three PowerShots and two IXUSes to offer. Most interesting is the 7.1-megapixel PowerShot TX1 that's designed more like a video camcorder with an upright body. You get optical image stabilization and face detection features, along with a 10x optical zoom lens that begins from a tight 39mm. More unheard of is the 30fps high-definition 720p 16:9 widescreen movie-recording option. There's also a new Auto ISO Shift feature that supposedly increases the sensitivity up to ISO 800 automatically (so you can shoot at a faster shutter speed) to reduce camera shake.

Like the PowerShots, the IXUS 75 and IXUS 70 also run on the Digic III image processor so you can expect similar performance and features. Both shooters sport 7.1-megapixel CCD sensors and 3x optical zoom, with the size of the LCD screens (3.0 inches on the IXUS 75 and 2.5 inches on the IXUS 70) being the most discernable difference.
