Samsung's magnificent seven

By Damian Koh

Even before CES, Samsung announced the Digimax i6, a slim 6-megapixel digicam that's capable of playing videos and MP3 files, along with three units in the S-series offering 5, 6 and 8 megapixels.

The Digimax i6 comes literally with a twist sporting a unique curved design on the holding edge of the camera. However, this iteration from the Digimax series didn't arrive as a major shocker as the company had a similar model launched in mid-2005--the Digimax i50--also capable of playing MP3 files. What was a surprise was the lower internal memory of the i6 (45MB) compared with the i50 (48MB), considering the former's higher-end features. Both units accept the widely available Secure Digital cards for additional memory.

On the lower budget end, Samsung has lined up three S-series cameras with almost identical specifications except for differing resolutions. The S500, S600 and S800 come with 3x optical zoom and a 2.4-inch LCD screen. And yes, all three look like they came out of the same mold.

At CES today, the Korean chaebol announced yet another trio that will provide a variety of functions including MP3 playback, voice recording, data storage and Webcam features on top of the standard still and motion image capture.

Combining a total of six different functions within a compact chassis, the SC-MS25 and SC-MS20 understandably have a higher internal storage capacity. The SC-MS25's 512MB built-in memory is one of the highest we've seen so far, while the SC-MS20 comes with 64MB. Both units also have SD/MMC slots for expandable memory.

The third model, the SC-MS10, appears to be a more watered-down version of the earlier two numbers, with a 5.3-megapixel CCD and 2.5-inch LCD (the SC-MS25 and SC-MS20 have 3-inch panels). The SC-MS10 has 64MB of onboard memory and accepts miniSD cards rather than the usual Secure Digital format.

Before you decide to hold off getting a digicam in lieu of these new multifunctional devices, be advised that we have no indication whether the models will be available in Asia.
