Fujifilm's party of four at CES

By Damian Koh

Fujifilm yesterday released four new FinePixes, including two entry-level models, the A400 and A500; an ultracompact F470; and a 5-megapixel V10 with onboard games.

We love the idea of playing games on the V10, but how much battery it drains is still an unknown.

If it's any indication that digital cameras of the future will cease to perform less of its primary functions--to take stills and motion images--the FinePix V10 has just breached the boundary. This 5-megapixel compact shooter arrives with four built-in games--Number Puzzle, Block Buster, Shooting Game and Maze--to be played on the camera's large 3-inch LCD screen. Not a world's first for display panel size, we saw similar dimensions earlier on Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-N1.

Traditional to the current lineup of FinePixes, the V10 sports Fujifilm's Real Photo Technology allowing high sensitivity levels (ISO 1,600) while minimizing the amount of noise on pictures. Its LCD screen is also coated with a special amplification layer to reduce glare. But we will have to do see if this layer is scratch-resistant as well.

The 6-megapixel FinePix F470 is Fujifilm's answer to the ultracompact market. This camera measures 19.7mm on the thickness scale--though again not the slimmest we've seen by far. The company's previous model, FinePix Z2, beats it by 0.7mm.

General photography users have a choice between the 4-megapixel FinePix A400 and the 5-megapixel A500. Both are entry-level models, shedding the extra features while gaining on competitive pricing and ease of use.

The V10 and F470 will be available in March for US$349 and US$279 respectively. The A400 will be priced at US$149 and the A500 at US$179--both of which will retail next month. No word yet on Asia's availability at this point.
