Pentax gears up Optios for CESPentax Imaging yesterday unveiled two upcoming Optios, A10 and E10, with a new naming system, ahead of the annual blockbuster CES that opens this Thursday.
Both cameras embrace a new naming system which is supposed to make it easier for consumers to recognize and differentiate the Pentax's lineup. The change in the convention will also allow the company more flexibility as it builds on future units--beginning from the Optio A10 and Optio E10. According to Ned Bunnell, director of Marketing for Pentax Imaging, the Optio A10 represents "a complete upgrade and overhaul" of its digital camera series and will be the first model of its high-end Optio Series.
Both cameras tout a compact design with the Optio A10 featuring a Shake Reduction mechanism to help eliminate blurry images. The other model, Optio E10, on the other hand, targets entry-level consumers who want an affordable and fuss-free shooter. From what we see on paper, Pentax's new Shake Reduction system operates with two internal gyro sensors that detect camera shake and shift the CCD to compensate for the movement. Until we have further information, this system sounds a lot like what Konica Minolta is already sporting on its Dynax 5D--a CCD-shift mechanism. The Optio A10 will be available in the US next month for under US$350 and the Optio E10 for under US$200 during the same month. We will update with information on Asia's availability once we get hold of them.
