Digicams: The fashion top 5s

By Edvarcl Heng, CNET Asia

In the fashion world, it's Gucci and Prada. For the camera chic, we have IXUS and Cyber-shot.

While dedicated shuttlebugs are excited by terms like optical image stabilizers and high ISOs, for the well-dressed and, certainly the well-heeled, words like vogue and sexy are infinitely more suitable. Don't get caught out with a boxy, plastic affair lurking furtively in your immaculate Loewe bag. It's a fashion faux pas that's so totally not in sync with your trendy image. Go with something sensuously curvy. Birds of a feather flock together, after all.

1.  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T200

CNET Asia rating: 7.4 out of 10
The good:  Great design; nice, large 3.5-inch screen; touchscreen.
The bad:  Iffy accuracy for Smile Shutter; no custom white balance; slight noise even at ISO 400.
The bottom line: It's a perfect camera for someone who prizes style and gimmicky features over performance and control.

3.  Olympus Mju 790 SW

CNET Asia rating: 6.8 out of 10
The good:  Camera is waterproof, shock resistant and freezeproof; nifty Perfect Shot Preview function.
The bad:  No manual exposure controls; slightly soft images.
The bottom line: If you need a camera that you can take snorkeling or skiing, then the Stylus 790 SW might be just the ticket, but you can find better image quality elsewhere for the same price.

5.  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2

CNET Asia rating: 7.4 out of 10
The good:  Peachy design; 4GB built-in memory; optical image stabilizer.
The bad:  Requires special cable for USB; on-screen controls not terribly clear; Smile Shutter accuracy not spot on.
The bottom line: The Cyber-shot T2 may look like a decent performer, but its sibling camera, the T200, will prove to be a stiff rival.
